in Relation to Social Networking Use

N.D Rosete, J. Cortez II, J.P Jose
Abstract – ang lupa ay may kaniya kaniyang tubig na may bulate at mga dragon na may
pakpak at mga anak.

I. Introduction

Social networks include websites and applications that allow users to share content, ideas,
opinions, beliefs, feelings, and personal, social, and educational experiences. They also allow
communication between a wide range of users at global level. Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and
LinkedIn are among the most popular and commonly used virtual social networks.

Social networks play a crucial role in learning environments as a key communicational

channel and a source of social support. Many social networking websites, such as Edmodo, are
specifically designed for learning (Manca S, 2017). Social networks have many advantages in
learning as they provide wide access to information resources, reduce barriers to group
interaction and support collaborative learning activities, encourage learners to learn more about
self-learning, increase engagement and learner’s motivation, enhance engagement of learners
with each other and their teachers and support active and social learning.

In general, the emergence of new technologies such as internet and social networks, in
addition to providing opportunities in teaching and improving the quality of global
communications, has created some threats. When the use of social networks is managed poorly,
they can have negative consequences at the individual and social levels. Social networking
addiction is one of the consequences that many social network users may experience. Thus, the
extensive use of social networks is a new form of soft addiction.

The main purpose of this study is to identify the cause-effect of Social Networking Use
and Academic Performance of the students.
II. Project Context

We all have been facing a lot of problems from the midst of this pandemic and surely
everyone is affected by it. The researchers found and made use of the data set of Wakefield,
James (2019) for their study; How does students' general academic achievement moderate the
implications of social networking on specific levels of learning performance?. The data set was
contributed to Mendeley.com for public use on September 26, 2019. This dataset shows the
students’ academic performance and their time of use for social networking. The dataset
provided a data for a total of 536 students’ which are displayed in general format. Since the focus
of this study are students, the researchers will make use of all the data provided by the dataset.
