Unit 1: Road Salt Culminating Activity

IUPAC name: Sodium Chloride

Common name: Salt
Self-made structure of atom:

Na+ Cl-

There are many different properties of road salt. Road salt, also known as salt, is ionic as

it consists of a metal and a non-metal. At SATP, or Standard Ambient Temperature and Pressure,

salt is a solid. Ionic compounds like sodium chloride have a high melting point, have a high

electrical conductivity in solids and low conductivity when it is dissolved in water, and has a

hard and brittle consistency. NaCl has an electronegativity of 2.1 which means that it is an ionic

bond not polar or polar covalent. Salt is also very soluble in water because the ions are more

attracted to the water molecules than each other.

Salt is very useful in day-to-day tasks. In fact, it is necessary for our survival. Salt is used

to make our food taste better. It also helps preserve food for extended periods of time so that the

food does not get old and rot or get moldy. Most people use salt in their household for baking as

well. Salt is fairly common, and most people use it daily. Salt can also be used for getting stains

off carpet, to polish brass and copper, relieve bug bites, stings and poison ivy, deodorize shoes,

and to keep wicker looking fresh. However, salt is mainly used to flavoring and preserving food.

Even though salt provides us with many benefits, there are a few things about salt that

make the compound toxic. If someone eats food with a lot of salt in it too often, there is a

possibility that they will get high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. A few signs that you

drink too much salt are; increased thirst, swollen feet or hands, and possibly headaches, although

signs are varied. But if a person does not get enough salt there are consequences as well. If their

blood falls below the range of 135-145 mEg/L, there are severe cases where this lack of sodium

will lead to muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. If these conditions continue it can

lead to shock, coma, and death.

There are many alternatives to salt. People have used mint, rosemary, nutmeg, and basil.

These are just a few of the alternatives to pick from. However, there are typically no cases where

a person can just cut salt completely from their diet as the consequences will speak for

themselves.
