This piece was created by a five-year-old boy.

Under Lowenfelds
stages of artistic development this student is in the correct stage of
preschematic, the people are represented by stick people. The
people and the names are floating at the top of the page. The
proportions of the heads are off compared to the bodies. Under
Edwards stages this student would fall under the pictures that tell a
story. Although there is not much to this image, the student is
portraying their love for another person with the heart between the
hands of the people. The sad thing is I was given this picture to give
to my sister (Aubree).

This piece was created by a nine-year-old boy. Under Lowenfelds

stages of artistic development this student is in between schematic
and dawning realism. The chocolate bar portrayed in this image is not
proportionate, but there is some overlap in the image. The ground is
represented with a line, there is a sun in the top corner. When I was
handed this image, the student asked several times if I liked the
picture and if it was any good, they were very critical of their work.
Under Edwards stages this student falls into the stage of complexity.
They added detail with the lines in the chocolate bar for the break
lines, the package looks as though it has been ripped open, and the
bite mark has ripples for teeth marks.

This piece was created by a four-year-old girl. Under Lowenfelds

stages of artistic development this student could be preschematic
stage. All the images are floating on the page, the trees are basic
shapes, of a rectangle with swirly looking tops. The bushes look the
same, with circles for berries. There is a river flowing through the
middle of the picture, with scribbles to represent the flowing. Under
Edwards stages this student is in the stage of symbols. They are
understanding that the symbols they are drawing represent the things
around them. This student wanted to show the stream that goes
through the woods at their cousin’s house. Which they have shown
with the water flowing, trees and bushes.
This piece was created by an
eight-year-old girl. Under
Lowenfelds stages of artistic
development this student
would be in the schematic
stage. The ground is
represented by a line, you can
see where they originally drew
a line for the sky before coloring
the full background blue. The
people have boxes for clothing,
the sizes of the people are not
proportionate. Under Edwards
stages this student would be
one the edge of landscape and
stage of complexity. The ground is represented by the green on the bottom, the sun in the corner of the
page. However, the people portrayed all have facial features, attempts at fingers, hair, and clothing.

This information would be useful to know when planning for lessons by having the added ability
to help understand where students are developmentally. Not that everything I will be doing in my
classroom will be art as that is not what I am majoring in but this can transfer to other subjects as well.
These can be used to discover where students are developmentally for creativity in their writing and
storytelling skills. I have already found myself looking at the picture’s students draw or have drawn and
given to my cooperating teacher and thinking about these stages and can see how and where these
students fall. These give another point of view into students development rather than standardized
testing where they are pressured to do their best and nerves take over, this is a pressure free
assessment.
