Ten questions answered in the space provided

Description and specifications

o You have been contracted to set up a LAN as illustrated in the figure above.
o All the computers have been purchased (thus not to be considered in your analysis)
o All the workstations and connectivity devices will be placed in the
workspace in such a way that no network segment length will exceed 25
feet.
o All the computers are running Windows 10 (except for two that are
running Windows Server 2016).
o Network adaptor cards need to be installed.

Considerations
o When designing and implementing a network, cost is always an issue.
o Therefore, you must be well informed and have researched accordingly.
o When proposing the adoption of networking equipment, we should always

keep in mind decision- making factors such as cost, performance, reliability

and availability (amongst others).

Requirements

1. Identify the type(s) of hubs that you would use on this network (provide a
brief justification).

I would use Cisco Linksys Ezxs55w Ether Fast 10/100 5 Port workgroup Hub on
this network. These hub are available in ebay and costs $56.42 CAD approx.
These hubs are more efficient, reliable, high in user ratings and having 5 ports
which is more suitable for this network. Also, there are very few network hubs are
available in market as hubs are outdated and this is one of the best.

2. Identify the type(s) of switches that you would use on this

network (provide a brief justification).

I would use NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS305) on

this network. These switches are available in Amazon and costs $19.98 CAD
approx. These switches are most cost efficient, reliable, high in user ratings and
having 5 ports which is more suitable for this network.

3. Identify the type(s) of network adaptor cards that you would

install (provide a brief justification).

There are so many network adaptor cards available in market. But, I would
prefer TP-Link TG-3468 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit PCI Express Network
Adapter cards for this network. This network adaptor supports different speed
limits and TP-Link one of the well known and reliable brand for this. Also,

comparing to all other network adaptors, this one is most cost effective and
available in Amazon just for $14.99 CAD.

4. Identify the type of cabling to be used (provide a brief justification).

I would prefer using UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cabling in this network. In
a UTP cable, conductors forming a single circuit are twisted around one another
to cancel out electromagnetic interference (EMI) from external sources.
Different Ethernet cables are available in market. One of the cable is StarTech
100ft CAT6 Ethernet Cable - CAT 6 Gigabit Ethernet Wire -650MHz 100W
PoE RJ45 UTP Category 6 Network/Patch Cord Snag less w/Strain Relief Fluke
Tested UL/TIA Certified (N6PATCH25WH). It is available in different colors in
Amazon and cost only $10.82 CAD for 100ft cable.

5. What kind of name-resolution solution would you implement

for the network? (Provide a brief justification).

Name Resolution is the process of resolving the name of a computer on a

network into its network address. Name resolution is an important part of
network communication because the logical names of hosts on the network must
be resolved into their network addresses before communication can take place.
On TCP/IP internetworks, NetBIOS Name Resolution is the process by which
the NetBIOS name of a computer is resolved to its IP address. NetBIOS name
resolution enables NetBIOS hosts to communicate with each other using
TCP/IP. Once a host’s name has been resolved to its IP address, the address
resolution protocol (ARP) can then be used to resolve the IP address into its
corresponding physical layer or MAC address. Once the physical address of a
host is known, frames may be placed on the wire and targeted to this address.

6. What kind of IP addressing solution would you implement for
the network? (Provide a brief justification).

The planning and documentation of IP addressing is an area that many

administrators don't always keep up with. However, it's important to do just that
and to use the IP addressing plan as a tool in documenting, designing, and
organizing our network.
• Static IP Address is an IP Address that once assigned to a network element
always remains the same. They are configured manually.
• Dynamic IP Address is a temporarily assigned IP Address to a network element.
It can be assigned to a different device if it is not in use. DHCP or PPPoE
assigns dynamic IP addresses.
I would prefer dynamic IP addressing solution for this network. It is less
expensive and it requires less maintenance comparing to Static IP. Also some
ISPs do not provide Static IP address.

7. Would the introduction of Active Directory be considered a must
in this network? (Provide a brief justification).

I would say the introduction of Active Directory (AD) be considered a must in

this network. Because, Active Directory is a Microsoft technology used to
manage computers and other devices on a network. It is a primary feature of
Windows Server, an operating system that runs both local and Internet-
based servers. Active Directory allows network administrators to create and
manage domains, users, and objects within a network. For example, an admin
can create a group of users and give them specific access privileges to
certain directories on the server. As a network grows, Active Directory provides
a way to organize a large number of users into logical groups and subgroups,
while providing access control at each level.

8. How many broadcast domains can you identify on this network? (Provide a
brief description).

There are 7 broadcast domains I can identify on this network. Router A breaks
up to 2, Router B breaks up to 3 and Router C breaks up to 2, including a
connection with internet.

9. How many collision domains can you identify on this network? (Provide a
brief description).

There are 14 collision domains I can identify on this network. 6 layers from all
the routers connected with switches and 8 layers from all switched; 5 from
Switch A and 3 from Switch B.

10. What improvement would you recommend for this network? (Provide a
brief description).

I would recommend replacing all the network hubs with network switches,
because, hubs are outdated, it is very difficult to find good hubs and they are
very expensive as well. Switches are very reliable, cost effective comparing to
hubs.
