AMMONIA SYNTHESIS

ENROLLMENT NO. 220313105009

NAME MEGHNATHI BHAVINGIRI
GUIDE NAVIN SHARMA SIR
HISTORY
 Ammonia was first produced from its elements in 1807 by Humphry Davy. He
electrolysed distilled water in the presence of air and detected small amounts of
ammonia.
 It is produced by the natural decomposition of animal and vegetable bodies.
Ammonia also occurs in the soil in the form of ammonium salts.
 China is the world's leading producer of ammonia. In 2022, the production of
ammonia in the Asian country was estimated at around 42 million metric tons of
contained nitrogen
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
 Molecular weight : 17.03g/mol
 Colour : Colourless
 Melting point : -77.73 °C
 Boiling point : -33.34 °C
 Density (gas) : 0.73 kg/m³
 Physical state : Gas (at room temperature)
 Flash point : 11 °C
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

 Ammonia reacts with carbon dioxide to make ammonium carbonate

2NH3 + CO2 → NH2CO2NH4
Which then decomposes to urea and water
NH2 CO2 NH4 → NH2 CONH2 + H2O
 Ammonia react with water to produce ammonium hydroxide
NH3 + H2O → NNH4OH
MANUFACTURING OF AMMONIA
APPLICATION & USES OF AMMONIA
 About 80% of the ammonia produced by industry is used in agriculture as fertilizer.
 Ammonia is used in wastewater treatment, leather, rubber, paper and food industries.
 It also is used in cold storage, refrigeration systems and in the production of
pharmaceuticals. Ammonia is used in the printing as well as cosmetics industries.
 It is also used in fermentation.

HAZARD & PRECAUTIONS

 Ammonia is a toxic gas or liquid that, when concentrated, is corrosive to tissues upon
contact.
 High levels of ammonia can irritate and burn the skin, mouth, throat, lungs, and eyes.
 Very high levels of ammonia can damage the lungs or cause death.
 Wear NH3-rated goggles and gloves (cuffed), and be fully clothed – long sleeve shirt
and pants (no shorts). Never wear contact lenses.
CONCLUSION

 Ammonia is very important roll play In growth of plants.

 Ammonia is essential for many biological processes and serves as a precursor for
amino acid and nucleotide synthesis.
 In the environment, ammonia is part of the nitrogen cycle and is produced in soil from
bacterial processes.
