THE SAGRADA
The Sagrada Família is an exceptional
church, both in terms of its origin and
foundation and in terms of its purpose. The
work of the brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí,
it was a project driven by and for the people,
and five generations have seen the evolution
of the church in Barcelona. Today, more
than 140 years after the first stone was laid,
the Basilica is still under construction.
On 7 November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI
made it a basilica.
ANTONI GAUDÍ
Antoni Gaudí was born
on 25 June 1852 in Reus,
a town in Baix Camp.
He attended primary
school at the Escuelas
FAMILIA
Pías, where he excelled
in geometry and arithmetic,
and where he received a traditional, religious
and humanistic education. The son of a
coppersmith, he entered the world of the trades
in his father's workshop in 1860. He spent his
childhood between Reus and the neighbouring
village of Riudoms, where his father's
farmhouse was located, and where he was able
to observe at close quarters what would become
a reference point throughout his life: nature.
Gaudí devoted himself exclusively to the
Sagrada Família from 1914 until his death on
10 June 1926.
He built other famous buildings such as La
Pedreda, Parc Güell, La Casa Batlló, La Sagrada
Familia, etc.

THE NATIVITY FAÇADE
The Nativity façade was begun in
1891, this façade is dedicated to the
feast of Christmas, in it we find the
birth of Jesus. The columns with the
names of Joseph and Mary resting on
the turtles. The doors that give access
to the temple are made of bronze with
motifs from nature. The Bernabé bell
tower was completed in 1925 and was
the only thing Gaudí was able to see
finished. The cypress tree on the
façade was finished in 1932, as well as
the adoration of the shepherds, the
Kings of the East and angels. On this
façade Gaudí included the devil in the
form of a serpent as in Eden.
THE TOWER OF THE VIRGIN MARY THE WEST SACRISTY
