ERI® 3748-PRELIMINARY DATA SHEET

CROSSLINKABLE EPDM ELECTRICAL INSULATION COMPOUND

SUITABLE FOR APPLICATIONS UP TO 35 KV

DESCRIPTION
Orange polymeric composition in pellet form, based on EPDM rubber containing peroxide curing agent,
ready for extrusion in a conventional CV or dry cure extrusion line.

APPLICATIONS
Cables insulated with ERI-3748 are suitable for industrial, power, mining, distribution, and other medium
voltage applications for wire and cable products rated up to 35 kV.

SPECIFICATIONS
When extruded and cured consistent with standard safe wire and cable industry practices, cable insulated
with ERI-3748 EPDM insulation will comply with the requirements as specified in the following
standards:

ASTM D-2802 -87

ICEA S-68-516 Type I and II
UL 44 (14 AWG)
UL 854
CSA C22.2 No. 38-1986

PROCESSING
ERI-3748 compound is engineered to be processed on conventional extrusion equipment. It is
recommended that this product is processed using a shallow screw, cross channel obstruction such as
mixing rings should be avoided. Metering screw with 2.5-3:1 compression ratio in 15/1 through 20/1
extruders should produce satisfactory results. The compound supplied is in the cleanest state and is of the
highest quality; however, the use of a breaker plate with a screen pack of approximately 20/40 or 20/60
mesh is recommended for optimal rheological flow and steady back pressure.

Pre-drying of the compound is not necessary, provided that the compound has been stored unopened in a
cool, dry area.

The following conditions are given as a guide for processing (single extrusion):

Temperature Profile: °F °C
Screw: 170-180 77-82

HANDLING
To ensure health and safety, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available and should be consulted
prior to use.

STORAGE
ERI-3748 containers should be stored at temperatures below 50°C (120°F) in a dry area to avoid massing
of pellets.
