Applying Process Charts and Time-Function
Mapping in MS Excel
Objectives:
Formulate and create service blueprinting, process charts, and time-function mapping using MS Excel.
Materials:
Scratch papers
Basic Principles:
A process chart is a symbolic representation that illustrates the sequence of actions within a process.
A time-function map is a process in a flow diagram with time added on the horizontal axis.
A service blueprinting is an operational tool that provides guidance on how a service will be provided, specifying
the physical evidence, staff actions, and support systems/infrastructure needed to deliver the service across its
different channels.
Procedures:
Process Chart
1. Open MS Excel and start a new worksheet.
2. Encode the following table:
Row height 20
Column width 10
Font Arial
Font size 10
Middle align
Alignment
Center
3. For cells E3 to I21, put 1 to whichever process the description belongs to.
4. Refer to Figure 1 for the finished process chart.
5. Save the file as “Surname_PS”, and place it on the network drive.
Time-Function Mapping
1. On the same file, start a new worksheet.
2. Follow the template below:
Row height 70
Column width 15
Font Arial
Font size 11
Middle align
Alignment
Center
3. Afterwards, insert arrows to show the process flow. Insert>Lines>Arrow. Refer to Figure 2.
4. Adjust the thickness of the arrow. Format>Shape Outline>Weight>1 ½ pt.
5. Adjust the color of the arrow. Format>Shape Outline>Black
6. Save the worksheet as “Time-Function Mapping”.
