ACH415: REACTOR DESIGN

Purpose of the Course
The purpose of this course is to equip learners with basic knowledge and skills for chemical
reactors

Expected Learning Outcomes


By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:
i. Describe the various chemical reactors and their modes of operation
ii. Discuss theories and principles of selected chemical reactor types
Course Content

Review of rate equation and its temperature and concentration dependence. Classification of
chemical reactors; modes of operation. Mathematical models and design equations for chemical
reactor. Ideal flow chemical reactors; non-ideal flow reactors. Batch, semi-batch and continuous
reactors. Design equations for batch and flow systems. Rate laws and stoichiometry. Isothermal
reactor design. Kinetics data interpretation. Reactor design for solid-catalyzed reactions and non-
elementary homogeneous reactions. Non-isothermal reactor design. Reactor design for series-
parallel multiple reactions. Optimization of performance, selectivity and choice of reactors;
Safety measures. Advances in reactor design.
