Challenges Faced by Adolescents in Schools

Adolescent years can be termed as difficult, especially in schools. Teenagers require the

intervention of issues they face throughout school life. Stress, self-image, and homework issues

in the school environment are sometimes exacerbated through hormonal scramble (Kunesh,

2018). School life sometimes is a time of physical and psychological obstacles rather than a

place of learning. The paper will critically evaluate some challenges teenage adolescents face in

school and their interventions.

Currently, several teenagers have experienced challenges and problems such as school

stress, test anxiety, exhaustion, and homework issues. The issues have affected individual

performance both in school and when they get back home (Kunesh, 2018). Students develop high

deterioration globally due to extreme situations of not benefiting from academic and home

performance. Hence, the need to advocate for adolescent challenges in school, which, if not

attended to, can result in other societal problems.

Teen Stress

In the current generation of adolescents, the school has been part of teenage stress.

Adolescents develop the pressure of performing well in different academic fields and

extracurricular activities. Furthermore, parents, educators, and societies expect adolescents to

make wise life-changing decisions. Although global development has provided several choices

for learners, the options make their life more stressful and overwhelming. The pressure has

resulted in lousy decision-making about academic and social life choices. With poor choices,

society ends up with future over occupation in particular professionals and a significant need in

other areas. On the other hand, learners might need to change their careers after experiencing

difficulties with the wrong choice made under pressure. The root cause of teenage stress in

school results from outside pressures of the need to perform (Pillay & Nesengani, 2019).

Prevention and Intervention for Teen Stress

Teenage stress in school cannot be alleviated by reducing the pressure of making life

choices. However, parents, educators, and society have employed psychological assistance

programs to help adolescents through stressful times in schools. Learners are provided with the

opportunity to discuss their issues, feelings, and choices without judgment to identify the pros

and cons of their meaningful decisions. Moreover, allowing adolescents to take the least time out

in activities they love reduces school pressure and stress. Schools that have employed

psychological intervention have reported reduced teenager stress and poor decision-making in

academic and social life.

Test Anxiety

Every learner must try a school grading test or any other test to evaluate their

performance and progress at one point in school life. It is difficult to find a learner who does not

face particular levels of test anxiety. Test anxiety is a form of psychological fear that occurs to

learners before and while taking a specific grading test. Test anxiety results from the

consequences of not doing well (ÇAKIR & ÖZELMACI, 2017). Test anxiety has resulted in

poor performance at the individual level despite early preparations. A high level of test anxiety

can result in an increased number of mental illnesses within society, consequently raising the

need for psychological intervention (Humensky et al., 2021).

Prevention and Intervention for Test Anxiety

To prevent learners' test anxiety, educators and parent need to formulate good studying

habits in school and home. Learners should be provided with time specifically for extensive test

studies. Setting time for studies after learning provides a humble time for learners to prepare

(Pillay & Nesengani, 2019). Therefore, several institutions have adopted school calendars that

spare time after coursework for learners to prepare before taking their tests. An institution with

well-scheduled academic well sets the stage for learners' test success due to reduced test anxiety.

Recommendations

Although the effort made to reduce challenges faced by an adolescent in school has been

successful, corporation between government, educators, society, and parents provides a better

platform to overcome these challenges. If every stakeholder in the learners' life performs their

duty thoroughly, adolescents will have reduced difficulties in school. For instance, when parents

make breakfast, teachers devote themselves to academic and extracurricular activities while the

government provides necessary resources for learning. Students will experience a reduced level

of stress and test anxiety.

Conclusively, every adolescent goes through different challenges in school that might

affect general performance. Individuals should identify and address such challenges to develop a

healthy society.
