The Weather in Belgium is temperate maritime, this will result in rainfall during almost the
whole year, although in the autumn months they are more pronounced, as well as average
annual temperatures of 9 to 10ºC.

It should be noted that on the coast the temperatures are much milder, while in the interior
of the Ardennes they are more extreme, with really hot summers and very cold winters.

Thus, while in summer we have an average temperature of about 17ºC, winter has an
average temperature of about 3.1ºC.

The official languages of Belgium are French and Dutch. The vast majority of the
inhabitants communicate in French, although they also speak English and increasingly

Typical Belgian dishes


1. Brasseries, fritkots or frituries

This is one of the most requested dishes in restaurants and street stalls in Belgium. They
are French fries, but not just any kind! These are very important to Belgians, both as a
symbol of national heritage. The stalls where they are sold are often called frietkot (in
Dutch) or friterie (French).

2. Mussels with Potatoes

Mussels with Potatoes, or moules-frites, are a dish that cannot be missing from typical
Belgian food. The dish seems simple, as it is made up of steamed mussels with fried
potatoes, and is usually accompanied by Belgian beer.

3. Hutspot or Hodgepodge
The Hutspot or Hodgepodge is a typical Belgian food dish that corresponds to the Flemish
Region. Among the typical Belgian dishes, this one stands out for being made with bacon,
sausage or ribs, and has potatoes, leeks, carrots and onions. All these ingredients, and even
some cabbage or beans, are braised over low heat.

4. Lapin a la Kriek (Rabbit with cherry)

Lapin a la Kriek is a Belgian dish where the protagonist is rabbit meat that is traditionally
marinated with Kriek; a traditional Belgian beer that is the fruit of the fermentation of sour
cherries. Kriek is the Flemish word for “cherry”. However, the designation "Kriek"
encompasses beers made with other fruits as well. For Belgians, the fruit-fermented beer is
a source of pride, even if it is something of a “dessert beer”.

The rabbit is marinated for several hours, depending on the type of recipe. The taste can
vary depending on what type of Kriek is used (sour, sweet, etc.) Maybe you're suspecting
it: Yes, this typical Belgian dish is traditionally served with French fries!
5. Waterzooi

The Waterzooi a typical dish of Ghent, the port city in the northeast of Belgium. However,
this typical Belgian food is served throughout the country. It is a fish or chicken soup with
vegetables and cream. The soup is creamy and traditionally also includes leeks, carrots and
onions.

Stoemp is a mashed potato and vegetable. This Brussels dish has been cooked since the
19th century,

7. Shrimp croquettes.

These croquettes are traditionally served with parsley fried in oil, and are one of the best-
known Belgian starters, usually accompanied by lemon. The shrimps are sewn, and without
shell they are reserved to make the croquettes. These are stuffed with meat.

8. waffles
Waffles are not only an indispensable part of any Belgian food collection, they are an
internationally known sweet. The waffle is very common in Belgian daily life: it can be
eaten for lunch, as a snack or as a snack. A temptation that goes well at any time!

9. Chocolates and chocolate

Belgian chocolate is one of the symbols of the country. It is said that there are more than
100 types of Belgian chocolate.

10. Rijsttaart or Tarte au Riz

The Rijsttaart or Tarte au Riz is a rice cake prepared with macaroni on the bottom. This is a
typical dish from Belgian Limburg and also from the Dutch, although the dish varies
depending on the region, and can be filled with cherry or other fruits. The rice cake has
milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar and of course rice. Its soft texture and flavor make it a
