SBI4U Quiz: Cellular Respiration

Name:
Date:
Part A: Knowledge & Understanding: Choose the most correct answer for each of the
following multiple choice questions and circle the letter representing your choice. [12 marks]

1. Aerobic respiration involves,

a) the release of energy in cells with an adequate supply of oxygen

b) breathing very rapidly, getting too much oxygen into the blood
c) the sequence of events in fermentation
d) the release of energy in cells without sufficient oxygen

2. If glucose is available, the rate of glycolysis is most likely to be limited by the cell’s
concentration of,

a) water b) ATP c) NAD+ d) CO2

3. Decarboxylation reactions occur in certain kinds of compounds which have a(n)

______________ functional group.
correct sequence of the major processes in the aerobic respiration of glucose
a) carbonyl-aldehyde b) amino c) carbonyl-ketone d) carboxyl

4. The correct sequence of the major processes in the aerobic respiration of glucose is

a) glycolysis 🡪 citric acid cycle 🡪 electron transport chain

b) glycolysis 🡪 electron transport chain 🡪 citric acid cycle
c) electron transport chain 🡪 glycolysis 🡪 citric acid cycle
d) none of the above

5. Which of the following processes requires molecular O2?

a) alcoholic fermentation b) citric acid cycle

c) electron transport chain d) glycolysis

6. Glycolysis occurs in,

a) bacteria b) plant cells c) muscle cells d) all of the above

7. The number of free O2 molecules used during the glycolysis of one molecule of glucose is,

a) 0 b) 1 c) 6 d) 36

8. If conditions are anaerobic, how many ATP molecules can be produced from C6H12O6?

a) 36 b) 4 c) 2 d) 10

9. If oxygen is absent, glycolysis will stop unless there is a way to convert an excess of,
a) ATP into ADP b) ADP into ATP c) NAD+ into NADH d) NADH into
NAD+
10. The conversion of pyruvic acid to ethyl alcohol occurs in the,

a) cytosol b) outer mitochondrial membrane

c) mitochondrial matrix d) cristae

11. All of the following are true about glycolysis except,

a) takes place in the cytosol b) generates a net yield of 4 ATP

c) is anaerobic d) occurs in both animals and plants

12. In lactic acid fermentation, all of the following are true EXCEPT,

a) lactic acid is produced b) lactate can be converted back into pyruvate

c) a net yield of 2 CO2 results d) NADH is oxidized back to NAD+

Part B: Communication Questions Answer the following question in complete sentences

where appropriate.

1. Glycolysis proceeds as a series of 10 enzyme catalyzed sequential reactions.

a) Draw the substrate of reaction #1. [1 mark]

b) This molecule is phosphorylated twice. Explain why this is necessary. [2 marks]

- Phosphorylation occurs on C-6, as C-1 is a carbonyl group and cannot be

phosphorylated. This occurs because phosphorylation of glucose ensures that
pathways intermediates remain in the cell.
c) How are PGAL and DHAP related? [1 mark]
- During glycolysis, compounds PGAL and DHAP are formed from fructose 1,6
bisphosphate by cleavage. Fructose 1,6- bisphosphate undergoes cleavage to yield
glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (PGAL) and dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) in a
reversible reaction catalysed by fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase.

d) Provide the reaction that results in the production of the reduced form of NAD+.[1 mark]

e) Provide the reactions in which ATP is produced? [2 marks]

g) Draw the molecular structure of the final product in this process. … ☺ [1 mark]
-

2. Describe one of the pathways for the products of glycolysis in ABSENCE of oxygen [3 marks]
- Anaerobic glycolysis is the predominant process in absence of oxygen and when
mitochondria are absent from the cell. As lactate dehydrogenase reoxidizes NADH
to NAD+, the pyruvate is reduced to lactate. Erythrocytes, which lack mitochondria,
rely on this mechanism as a major source of ATP.
