Once a Raider, Always a Raider!

East High hires Ras Vanderloo as its new Head Basketball Coach
SIOUX CITY - A few first names will change on the East High basketball brochure, but that's about it. So insists Ras Vanderloo, the latest Vanderloo to take over the Black Raider boys' basketball program. Ras will follow his brother Jeff as East High's head boys' basketball coach, the school announced on Tuesday. "On the outside, people probably won't notice any changes at all," said Ras, who served as an assistant under his older brother for the past 17 years. "We have great kids, the talent level's high, there are huge expectations and the goals are high." Jeff, the school's head coach the past 19 seasons and the winningest high school boys coach in Sioux City history, left East in June to become the director of basketball operations at Creighton University. Upon hearing Jeff's decision, it didn't take Ras long to decide he wanted to pursue the job. "About five seconds," he said. "I think it's a very easy transition for the coaches and kids," he added, "just for the fact that very little's going to change." Ras, 45, currently teaches civics at East Middle School. He is also the athletics director there, a position he intends to keep along with his new title. "This is a position that a lot of people would be willing to have," he said. "We've got a great tradition and basketball history and the support at East is great." He'll inherit a Black Raiders squad that finished 195 last season and lost to Ankeny in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament. Four starters return this year, including all-state center Adam Woodbury. The 7-foot-1 senior Woodbury, who averaged 18.5 points and 12.4 rebounds for East last season, has received scholarship offers from several Division I programs including North Carolina, Iowa and Nebraska - though he has yet to make a commitment. "It's no secret Adam's a national marquee player and I'm lucky to be able to coach him," Ras said. If anyone's familiar with what Woodbury is capable of, it's Ras. Under his brother, he was the one responsible for coaching the posts. "Coaching Adam is something I've done forever anyway, so individually that's something that will continue," he said. As will the number of Vanderloo brothers sitting on the East bench. John Vanderloo, the former head coach at North High, will take over the assistant position left open by Ras. "I think it's a requirement that we had to have two Vanderloos on the sideline," Ras said with a laugh. "Basically, the staff is going to be pretty much intact." It's safe to say basketball runs in the Vanderloo blood, with a name that's become synonymous with Siouxland basketball - and East High hoops, in particular. Jeff and Ras are the eldest of the four sons Rich Vanderloo, a former athletic director and boys basketball coach at East. John and twin brother Jim - the school district's director of secondary education - are the youngest. This article was reprinted from the Sioux City Journal.

2011-12 Message to The Players

Its no secret that the expectations for the 2011-12 Black Raider Basketball Team are very high. With high expectations comes excitement and challenges. We as a team need to work hard this fall to get better as players and to get into shape. To become a good player it takes time, effort and attitude. Any player who thinks he is going to become a good player because he showed up for open gym one night or shot baskets in his driveway one time is heavily mistaken. It takes many hours, days, months and years to become a good player. We have always had great attendance at open gyms and I expect that to continue. Reminder that playing in games at open gym is a good way to get better, but working on your individual game on a side court is also a very good way to get better. Finally the most important of becoming a good player is attitude. Those that believe and want to get better usually do get better. Those that want to watch others get better and complain about it usually dont become good players..

Coaches Corner
A message from Coach Ras Vanderloo
I want to take this time to say how thankful I am to all the people who showed great support for me this summer through the East Basketball job search. Now that it is done, its time to get to work to keep East Basketball at a high level and strive for the goals that we have set. We have great kids at East High School and that where it all starts with the kids. I can assure you we will work as hard as any coaching staff in America to make our fans, supporters and alumni very proud of our team this year and many years to come.
