Risk Factors: Priority nursing diagnoses:

S/S & Abnormal Assessment
Findings:
Hyperparathyroidism is the increased secretion of the
parathyroid hormone. PTH helps increase bone reabsorption of
calcium. Ca and Phosphorus are inverse of each other
Associated with hypercalcemia
Caused by parathyroid tumor, vit. D deficiency renal failure, and
hyperphosphatemia Loss of appetite, constipation, fatigue,
Electrolyte imbalance
muscle weakness, fractures, kidney stones
Risk for imbalanced nutrition

Pathophysiology: HOW have these comorbidities

caused or potentiated the problem?

Medical Diagnosis:
Hyperparathyroidism
Dx by an increase in PTH levels, increased ionized Ca, and a decreased
phosphorus

Nursing Interventions: How are you preventing

potential complications? What care are we
implementing related to nursing diagnoses?
Complications: List high priority,
potential complications.
Treatment is a parathyroidectomy
Kidney stones
Postop: watch for s/s of low Ca such as stridor and cramping. Increase fluids to
Fractures 4,000mL/day to reduce risk of kidney stones
Osteoporosis

Renal failure
