346 SHEAR PLATES AND SPLIT RINGS

The minimum spacing is 3.50 in. for 2 12 in. split rings and 2 58 in. shear plates
and is 5.0 in. for 4 in. split ring or shear plate connectors. For this minimum
spacing, C  = 0.5.
Where the actual spacing between split ring or shear plate connectors is greater
than the minimum spacing, but less than the minimum spacing for C = 1.0, the
geometry factor, C , is determined by linear interpolation. The geometry factor
calculated for spacing is applied to reference design values for both parallel-
and perpendicular-to-grain components of the resistance. Where three or more
connectors are used in one face of a member, the spacing between any two
connectors should be checked.

EXAMPLE 14.2.3.2-1 SPACING AT ANGLE TO GRAIN

Given: 2 58 in. diameter shear plates are installed in a wood main member with
steel side plates. They are installed with a 40◦ connector axis angle and load
is applied at an angle of 30◦ relative to the member axis as shown in Figure
14.2.3.2-1.
Wanted: Determine the required spacing along the connector axis for full
design value and the minimum reduced design value.
Approach: the spacing for full design value, Sβ , will be calculated using
Equation 14.2.3.2-1 and the values for SA and SB from Table 14.2.3.2-1.

Solution:
Values from Table 14.2.3.2-1 (θ = 30◦ ):

SA = 5.125 in
SB = 3.875 in
