ACT ONE
Scene One
ALFRED, the young hero of our story, fights his way through the nocturnal snow flurry.
He carries all kinds of luggage. In desperation, HE stops and looks around.
ALFRED
Professor! Professor!!
(sings)
HEY, HO, HEY!
CAN YOU HEAR ME, PROFESSOR?
HEY, HO, HEY!
GIVE A SHOUT, I PRAY!
Probably he sat down somewhere to enter a note into his little book. When
Professor Abronsius scribbles down his notes, the world is gone for him.
(sings)
HEY, HO, HEY!
I CAN’T SEE YOU, PROFESSOR?
HEY, HO, HEY!
GOD, I’VE LOST MY WAY!
I’ve got to find him, or else he will freeze to death. What an end!
Somewhere in the snow, HE discovers the Professor’s umbrella. HE approaches it, and
soon sees the PROFESSOR laying on his back, frozen stiff.
Professor!!
HE shoulders the PROFESSOR’s frozen body, takes up the luggage and exits stumbling
as the lights go down.
GARLIC, GARLIC!
GARLIC, GARLIC!

ABBRONSIUS opens his eyes. After having checked what is going on, HE looks at the
peasants wearing strings of garlic around their necks.
HE gives ALFRED a nudge.

CHAGAL puts down the luggage and ushers PROFESSOR ABRONSIUS and ALFRED

While HE opens the door, we once more hear, under his singing, softly the voice of

Music continues. CHAGAL ushers PROFESSOR ABRONSIUS and ALFRED back into
their room. HE leaves to get something from downstairs.
SARAH gets out of the bath and, a sheet wrapped around her body, enters her room
through her room’s bathroom door.
SARAH
UH-UH-UH...
ALFRED has tiptoed into the bathroom. As HE reaches out to grab Sarah’s sponge,
SARAH returns. For a moment THEIR eyes meet. Then BOTH go back to their
respective rooms, closing the doors to the bathroom.
ABRONSIUS and ALFRED go to bed. In her room, SARAH also lies down.
Then we hear Chagal's steps on the stairs as he returns. HE sneaks through the guest
room, carrying a hammer, nails and a bunch of slats, and enters the bathroom. During
the following song, he is boarding up Sarah's door from inside the bathroom.

REBECCA knocks the PROFESSOR down. With a loud bang he hits the floor.
REBECCA looks in his face. As SHE discovers that it is the Professor, SHE screams and
runs back into her room.
CHAGAL, alarmed by the scream, leaves MAGDA alone and scurries down the ladder
to go back to his wife. ALFRED and SARAH, in a cloud of dreams, do not hear
anything. They leave their beds like moonwalkers.

KOUKOL, the hunchback, enters. When CHAGAL, REBECCA and MAGDA see HIM,
they immediately stop singing. THEY are visibly scared of KOUKOL. REBECCA and
MAGDA retreat into the house. Obsequiously, HE tries to find out what KOUKOL wants.
Music continues instrumentally.
CHAGAL
Good morning, Mr. Koukol. What can I do for you on this wonderful morning?
KOUKOL
Kh....khh....ah...ndles....orghh.
CHAGAL
Candles? Well, that’s a problem. We’re short of candles ourselves. It’s been a
long winter.
At the window on the upper floor, SARAH appears. CHAGAL does not know SHE is
watching.
KOUKOL
(angrily)
Ho...Hu....Uhreeee....oguhh...hoooh.
CHAGAL
Alright, alright, Koukol. Calm down. I’ll see what’s left. Wait here!
KOUKOL gestures to SARAH to be prepared at night. ABRONSIUS peeps out of the inn
and observes KOUKOL. KOUKOL does not see ABRONSIUS.
KOUKOL
CHAGAL comes back carrying a huge bundle of candles. HE gives the candles to
KOUKOL.
CHAGAL
Here you are, Koukol. Two dozen, non-dripping. Give my regards to his
Excellency... And please remind him of the outstanding bills...

SARAH (Cont.)

Music changes dramatically as, suddenly, snow falls on SARAH and we see COUNT
VON KROLOCK on the inn’s roof, looking down on SARAH. SARAH is stiff with fear
and stops singing.

and discovers the open scuttle.
ABRONSIUS
The smell of decay! Didn’t I say it? We had a visitor here. Now we’re going to get
him. I knew it all the time. He hasn’t harmed her yet. Tries to seduce her, because
the blood of volunteers tastes better, I guess.
In her room, CHAGAL lays SARAH over his knee and spanks HER.
CHAGAL
Why can’t you listen! Do you want to drive me crazy? Oh! I will teach you...

REBECCA
CHAGAL
SARAH

Scene Eight
Later that night, KOUKOL prowls around the inn. HE carries a bundle under his arm
and holds a lantern in his other hand. Moving the lantern up, down and around he gives
a signal to SARAH who is seen behind her window on the second floor. KOUKOL leaves
the bundle and exits, as SHE comes down from her room to pick it up.
SARAH is just about to open the bundle when ALFRED slips out of the inn.
The music turns very Puccini-like and romantic. Yearningly ALFRED looks up to
Sarah's window, not noticing that SHE is standing right behind him.
ALFRED
HOW AM I TO SLEEP?
ALL THE TIME I THINK OF YOU.
THERE IS SO MUCH ON MY MIND
THAT YOU MUST KNOW.
IF YOU’RE NOT ASLEEP,

HE indicates that ALFRED should bring the bag. REBECCA sends MAGDA to her

draws the sheet away and bends over the corpse.

CHAGEL chases MAGDA. SHE flees into the auditorium, CHAGAL follows HER. When
SHE is back on the stage, HE finally gets HER and bites her in her neck.
Having stilled his blood thirst, HE leaves HER alone and gives off a cry of lust. Then
HE looks at MAGDA again. To his surprise, SHE is dead. HE panics. HE carries HER
to the table where HE lays HER down.
HE hears Professor ABRONSIUS and ALFRED come down the stairs. After having
covered MAGDA with the sheet, HE hides under the table.
By then, Professor ABRONSIUS and ALFRED have entered. A jittery ALFRED opens

ends in the middle of a bar.
ABRONSIUS
Trying to move on innocently, ALFRED and Professor ABRONSIUS lead SARAH to the
door. After a moment of bafflement, the VAMPIRES try to catch THEM.

ACT TWO
Scene Eleven
ALFRED, SARAH and ABRONSIUS are running through the snowy landscape.
KOUKOL follows. We see THEM cross the stage twice. When ALFRED, SARAH and
ABRONSIUS enter the third time, ABRONSIUS staps and changes direction. THEY exit
before KOUKOL enters.
KOUKOL does not know where to go. WOLVES' eyes appear in the darkness. In no
time, KOUKOL is surrounded by wolves. The chase theme ends with a last, blood
chilling scream.
Scene Change.
When the music starts again, the mood is very romantic. A starry night with a full moon
in the black sky. Professor ABRONSIUS trudges through the snow to sit down DS
eventually. Behind HIM, there are ALFRED and SARAH walking through the snow-
covered landscape, two lovers in a winterland. A touch of Puccini.

I’LL BE YOURS
AND YOU’LL BE MINE,

ALFRED turns to SARAH to kiss HER. Looking over his shoulder into the audience,
SHE opens her mouth and reveals vampire teeth.
SARAH bites ALFRED's neck, as the music soars (Reprise of chorus). A drop of blood
falls on ALFRED’s hand.
ALFRED
What is that?
SARAH
HE does so.

ABRONSIUS(Ctd.)
As Professor ABRONSIUS is busy preparing his new thesis which will certainly win him
the Nobel Prize, HE forgets the world around HIM. HE does not realize that the
ENSEMBLE appears US, first one by one, then in groups. THEY, ALFRED and SARAH
all join in the Finale Song, softly first, then louder.
