Genetic Crosses Assignment

Traits: eye colour

- Green eyes
- Brown eyes

Question:

Shayan and Sadia are a newly married couple expecting their first child. Shayan is a male
young, brown eyes. Sadia is a young female with green eyes. Shayan is homozygous
recessive, while Sadia is heterozygous dominant. Having green eyes is dominant over brown
eyes. What are the phenotypes and genotypes of Shayan and Sadia’s child to have brown eyes
or green eyes?

Answer:

To answer this question, we are required to find the genotypes. Shayan is homozygous
recessive, therefore, his genotype would be gg. Sadia is heterozygous dominant, therefore, her
genotype is Gg.

Using the information below, we should be able to complete a punnett square and record the
genotypes. From that information, we will be able to identify the phenotypes of Shayan and
Sadia’s child to have brown eyes and green eyes.

Genotype
Parents gg x Gg
Male female

Gametes

Punnett square
g g

G Gg Gg

g gg gg

Genotypes:
50% homozygous recessive (gg)
50% heterozygous dominant (Gg)

Phenotypes:
50% chance of green eyes
50% chance of brown eyes

As a result of the punnett square, we are able to identify that there is a 50% chance of Shayan
and Sadia’s child to have brown eyes and a 50% chance of their child to have green eyes.
