Instructions For Ungrouped Data:

Measures of Central Tendency:
Find the Mean, Median and Mode of the following data that you
gathered.

Assessment Question
1. Is arithmetic mean the same with weighted mean? In what way
they are same?
2. Is it possible to have a mode of zero? Why or why not?

Answers and Solutions:

MEAN (Mn, X̅ )
Mean = ∑ x
n

Mn = 2(80) + 2(82)+ 1(81) + 1(83)+ 1(85)+ 2(86) + 2(87) + 2(89) + 3(90) + 2(91) + 9(93)
+ 7(94) + 4(95) + 3(96) + 1(97) + 3(98)

= 4,103

Mn = 91. 18

Assessment Questions
1. Yes, if all the weights are equal, then the weighted mean is the same as the arithmetic
mean. In arithmetic mean, we add all the items or observations then, divide the sum by the
total number of observations. However, in weighted mean you multiply the values by a
certain factor that is based on some other criterion to give more ‘weight’ to some values
than others. They both represent the average of a given data.

2. Yes, it is possible to have 0 mode for a set of data. If this is the case, we cannot use mode
as a measure of central tendency. Some example does not have any repeating number, and
hence it does not have any mode.
