Hypothesis: If the starch solution changes color, then the iodine solution diffused
through the visking tubing.
Material/Apparatus:
visking tubing
thread
pipette
iodine solution
starch solution
beaker
tweezers
petri dish
distilled water
glass stirring rod
Procedure:
1. A piece of visking tubing was moistened and rubbed until it opened.
2. A knot was tied at one end of the tubing.
3. A pipette was used to fill the tubing with some starch solution.
4. A thread was used to tie the top of tubing tightly.
5. The tubing was rinsed with distilled water to ensure that there was no starch
solution on the outside of the tubing.
6. Iodine solution was placed into a beaker.
7. The visking tubing was gently placed into the iodine solution.
8. The apparatus was left for ten minutes.
Observations/Results:
The color before ten minutes The color after ten minutes
Conclusion:
In conclusion, diffusion was observed in this experiment. The iodine solution
diffused through the visking tubing causing the starch solution to turn blue-black.
The starch solution was unable to diffuse due to larger, more complex molecules.
Reflection;
Through this experiment, I learnt that not all substances are able to diffuse due to
the size of their molecules. Substances with larger, more complex molecules, like
starch, are unable to diffuse, whilst, substances with smaller molecules, like
iodine, are able to diffuse through membranes. Diffusion takes places many times
in our daily lives; when we breathe, oxygen diffuses from the air into our blood,
when we eat, calcium diffuses from the food to our cells in the small intestine.
