RAINWATER HARVESTING TECHNIQUES

● Roof Top Rainwater Harvesting

● Surface Runoff Rainwater Harvesting

COMPONENTS OF ROOFTOP RAINWATER HARVESTING

1 Catchment area

2 Transportation

3 First flush

4 Storage system

5 Delivery system

6 Filtration system
● Catchment : the surface from which rainwater is collected for
storage. This could be a rooftop, a paved flooring surface or a
landscaped area. Catchment area is the area of that surface, usually
calculated in square metres.

● Gutters and Downtake pipes: lead the water from the catchment
surface to the storage tank

● Filters and first flush devices: remove grit, leaves and dirt that the
rainwater may transport from the catchment, before the water
enters the storage tank. When it rains after a long gap, the rooftops
are usually very dirty and the rainwater also carries with it a lot of
dissolved air pollutants. A first flush device diverts the water from
the first rain so that it does not enter the storage tank.

● Storage tanks: These can be above the ground or below the ground.

● Delivery systems: Piping systems that convey the stored rainwater

till the point of end-use.

It is not recommended to use harvested rainwater for drinking, cooking

and dishwashing unless water quality issues are verified and necessary
treatment or purification systems installed.
CATCHMENT AREA
TRANSPORTATION

Rain water from rooftop should be carried through downtake water pipes or
drains to storage/ harvesting system. Water pipes should be UV resistant of
required capacity

FILTRATION

Filters are used for treatment of water to

effectively remove turbidity, colour and
microorganisms
SLUMP
A storage provision to collect filtered water from the
tank through the filter channel for storage and
collection. There are various options available for the
construction of these tanks with respect to the shape,
size and the material of construction.

DELIVERY SYSTEM

It is a system to deliver water for uses. Pumps are used

to take the water out from the tank to deliver out by
pipes.
ADVANTAGES
• Relatively cheap materials can be used for construction of containers and
collecting surfaces

• Construction methods are relatively straightforward

• Low maintenance costs and requirements

• Environment friendly

• Increase the ground water level and quality.

• Mitigates the effects of drought.

• Reduces the runoff

• Reduces the soil erosion

• Helps in reducing water and electricity bills

• Provides a supply of safe water close to homes, schools or clinics, encourages

increased consumption, reduces the time women and children spend collecting
water, reduces back strain or injuries from carrying heavy water containers
DISADVANTAGES
• Supplies can be contaminated by bird/animal droppings on catchment
surfaces and guttering structures unless they are cleaned/flushed before use

• Poorly constructed water jars/containers can suffer from algal growth and
invasion by insects, lizards and rodents. They can act as a breeding ground
for disease vectors if they are not properly maintained

• Requires some technical skills to install and provide regular maintenance

• Regular maintenance should be needed

• Unpredictable rain fall Importance of rain water harvesting and future

• It is important to save the water for the future

• Certain roof types may seep chemicals, pesticides, and other pollutants
into the water that can harm the plants
