Roles of Sports Activity Assessment in Managing Stress

Introduction:

Physical fitness is a condition that allows the body to effectively cope with
the demands of daily activities and to still have the energy to enjoy other leisure
activities. As an effect, the body feels active, healthy, and eventually, stress-free.
That is why engaging in different sports is very effective to improve our body.
Furthermore, it is also necessary to assess the body’s response to sports activity to
be able to change, modify, or intensify activities that affect the body’s stress levels.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

 Describe the role of physical activity assessments in managing one’s stress.

True or False
Directions: Identify whether the given statements are true or false. Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Engaging in moderate to vigorous sports is highly discouraged because it

causes your body to get tired and feel stressed.
2. Sports participation triggers brain chemicals that make you feel happier and
more relaxed.
3. Engaging in vigorous sports is not advised to those who want to lose weight
since it makes the muscles thicker, thus increasing one’s weight.
4. Team sports provide a chance to unwind and engage in a satisfying challenge
that improves your fitness.
5. Sports and other forms of physical activity activates the mind thus, causing
difficulty in sleeping.

Have you ever participated in a sports training program? How did your body
respond to the demands of the training?

Sports in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Being active can boost
your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries. However, sports
participation alone— without assessing oneself— is not an assurance of realizing
physical fitness. It is necessary to assess one’s participation in sports through
observations, questionnaires, interviews, and physiological markers like heart rate,
and calorimetry.

Sports and Stress

 Sport improves your mood

Whether you are playing sports, working out at a gym, or taking a brisk
walk, physical activity triggers brain chemicals that make you feel happier and
more relaxed. Team sports in particular, provide a chance to unwind and engage in
a satisfying challenge that improves your fitness. They also provide social benefits
by allowing you to connect with teammates and friends in a recreational setting.

 Sport improves your concentration

Regular physical activity helps keep your key mental skills sharp as you age.
This includes sharp thinking, learning, and using good judgment.

 Sport reduces stress and depression

When you are physically active, your mind is distracted from daily stresses.
This can help avoid getting bogged down by negative thoughts. Exercise reduces
the levels of stress hormones in your body.

 Sport improves sleep habits

Sport and other forms of physical activity improve the quality of sleep. It does
this by helping you fall asleep faster and deepening your sleep. Sleeping better can
improve your mental outlook the next day, as well as improve your mood. Just be
careful not to engage in sports too late in the day. Evening practices within a few
hours of bedtime may leave you too energized to sleep.

 Sport helps you maintain a healthy weight

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend sports
participation as a healthy way to maintain weight. Individual sports, such as
running, cycling, and weightlifting, are all particularly effective ways to burn
calories. Staying within a recommended weight range reduces the likelihood of
developing diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension.

 Sport boosts your self-confidence

The regular exercise that comes with playing sport can help boost your
confidence and improve your self-esteem. As your strength, skills, and stamina
increase through playing sports, your self-image will improve as well. Sport provide
you with a sense of mastery and control, which often leads to a feeling of pride and
self-confidence.
