RE: SOIL SAMPLE
The soil samples brought for pathological analysis refers.
Diagnosis
Analysis was carried out specifically for Ralstonia solanacearum but this bacterium
was not detected. This bacterium causes bacterial wilt disease which leads to
wilting and eventual death of plants.
Management Strategies:
Since the land from which the sample was taken appears free of the bacterium,
infestation should be prevented by adopting the following precautions:
1. Disinfect farm implements (e.g. pangas, jembes, ploughs, gumboots, shoes, pegs
and sprinkler stands) before use. A jik solution (dilution of 500 ml in 10 litres of
water) can be used for washing the implements. This will prevent introduction
of the bacterium from potentially affected fields.
2, Control run-off water which may be coming from affected areas to avoid
introduction of the bacterium. You should also ensure that workers start
working from the disease-free areas before proceeding to the affected parts of
the field.
3. Start-off seedlings/seed should be clean [certified from reliable sources.

RE: SOIL SAMPLE FOR NEMATODE ANALYSIS
The soil samples brought to the Plant Pathology Section for nematode analysis
refer.
Results:
The following nematodes were extracted from the soil sample.
| Nematodes Identified | No. of nematodes in 200cc of soil ]
Plant-parasitic nematodes None
Free-living (non-parasitic nematodes) none
No plant parasitic nematodes were found in the soil sample. Only free-living
nonparasitic) nematodes which are not harmful to plants were found present
Management recommendations:
Although no plant parasitic nematodes were identified from the soil sample,
care should be taken to avoid introduction of nematodes through infected
seedlings, manure and water for irrigation.

RE: SOIL SAMPLE
The soil samples brought for pathological analysis refers.
Results:
‘A fungus, Fusarium sp, was isolated (detected through laboratory analysis) in the
soil samples. Strains of Fusarium may cause diseases in a wide range of crops. In
particular, strains of Fusarium oxysporum may cause root rots and wilt diseases in
horticultural crops including beans, tomato, capsicum, sweet pepper, cucurbits,
etc. Fusarium solani may cause stem cankers in tree crops and most vegetable
crops.
Management Strategi
In order to reduce the risk of Fusarium-caused diseases the following measures
should be taken:
1. Always plant certified, disease-free seeds or materials to avoid
introduction of additional pathogens (disease-causing organisms) on your
farm.
2. Scout fields/crops for early disease detection and management.
3. Ensure proper drainage in your soils as waterlogged conditions favor some soil
borne diseases.
4. Disinfect farm tools to prevent spreading the pathogen from one area of the
farm to another.
5 Apply bio-pesticides containing Trichoderma (e.g. Rootgard, Trianum-P,
Eco-T or Trichotech) either as a root-dip before planting or as a soil drench
after planting.
KALRO KABETE
DE ron aad 76 Drench the soil with fungicides such as Previcur N before planting or during
plant growth to control soil borne pathogens including Fusarium spp. Always
follow the manufacturers’ recommendations.
7 Itis advisable to integrate (combine) as many control measures as possible.
