newspapers, etc.?

 What is the highest level of English you have achieved?

Future
 Are there any events coming up you need to prepare for in English (e.g. a conference or an
interview)?
 Are you planning to use English for higher education at an English-speaking university? Are
you planning on moving to an English-speaking country?
 Are there any other reasons you will need English in the future?

Learning Expectations
 How do you learn new things (study techniques)?
 As a student, what do you think you need to do inside and outside class to maximise your
learning?
 What do you expect the teacher to do to help you learn?
 How much time do you have to practise English outside class?

Example Needs Analysis Tasks

Possible Writing Tasks

1. Write a short essay saying when you started to study English, what study techniques you find
useful and what you plan to do with English in the future.
2. Write a letter to your parents describing your journey to England, your first impressions of
the country and what you hope to do during the rest of your stay.

Possible Speaking Task

 Get the students to work in pairs and interview each other to complete questionnaires (e.g.
the one above). They fill in the questionnaire for their partner not themselves.
