Tutorial-3

1. F = R, V = R3 . For what value(s) of α ∈ R the vectors (1, α, 1),

(1, 0, 1) and (1, 1, 1) in R3 are linearly independent.

2. Find three vectors in R3 which are linearly dependent, and are such
that any two of them are linearly independent.

3. Let F = C, V = C2 . Determine a condition on the numbers α, β, γ

and δ in C such that the vectors (α, β) and (γ, δ) in C2 are linearly
independent.

4. Determine whether the following sets are linearly dependent or linearly

independent. If it is linearly independent, then find which one is a
basis.

(a) F = R, V = R4 , S = {(1, 1, 2, 4), (2, −1, −5, 2), (1, −1, −4, 0), (2, 1, 1, 6)}
(b) F = R, V = P3 [x], S = {x3 − x, 2x2 + 4, −2x3 + 3x2 + 2x + 6}

(c) F = R, V = M2×2 (R), S = , , ,

5. Let F = R, V = M2×2 (R), W1 = ∈ V | a, b, c ∈ R , and

W2 = ∈ V | a, b ∈ R . Prove that W1 and W2 are sub-

spaces of V , and find the dimensions of W1 , W2 , W1 ∩W2 and W1 +W2 .

6. Let F = R, V = Pn [x]. Find the two subspaces W1 and W2 of V such

that V = W1 ⊕ W2 .

7. Let {u, v, w} is a basis of a vector space V over R. Prove that {u +

v, v + w, w + u} is also a basis of V over R.

8. Determine whether the following mappings are linear transformation

or not:

(a) T : R2 → R2 is defined by T (x, y) = (x − y, x + 3y)

(b) T : R3 → R2 is defined by T (x, y) = (|x|, y + z)

(c) T : Pn [x] → R2 is defined by T (f (x)) = ( 0 f (x)dx, f ′ (2)), where
f ′ (2) denote the first order derivative of f (x) at x = 2.

(d) T : M2×2 (C) → C is defined by T ( )=a+b+c+d

9. Let T : R4 → R3 be the linear transformation defined by T (x, y, z, t) =

(x − y + z + t, 2x − 2y + 3z + 4t, 3x − 3y + 4z + 5t):

(a) Find a basis and dimension of Kernel of T .

(b) Find a basis and the dimension of the Image of T .

10. Determine whether the following linear transformations are (i) one-one
(ii) onto. If yes, find the inverse of linear transformations.

(a) T : C2 → C2 is defined by T (z1 , z2 ) = (2z1 − z2 , 3z1 + 3z2 ), here

F = C.
(b) T : R3 → P2 [t] is defined by T (x, y, z) = (x + y)t2 + (x + 2y +
2z)t + (y + z).

11. Let T : R2 → R3 be a linear transformation such that T (0, 1) =

(4, 0, −1) and T (1, −1) = (2, −2, 3). Then find

(a) T (5, 23)

(b) T (−3, −17)
