FORMAL COMMUNICATION
It refers to the flow of official
information through proper,
predefined channels and routes. The
flow of information is controlled and
needs deliberate effort to be
properly communicated. Formal
communication follows a
hierarchical structure and chain of
command.

Downwards Communication - The flow of information from
a higher level (superior) to a lower level (subordinate) in an
organization is known as downwards communication.

Upward Communication - The flow of information from a


lower level (subordinates) to a higher level (superior) of an
organizational hierarchy is known as upward communication.
Types of Formal
Communication Horizontal Communication or Lateral Communication -
The flow of information between people of different
departments working at the same level in an organization
is known as Horizontal Communication.

Diagonal Communication -The flow of information between


persons holding different levels of authority in different
departments is known as Diagonal Communication.
