Definition of Communication

communication is a process of sharing and conveying messages or information from one person to another
within and across channel, context, media, and cultures. There is a wide variety of contexts and situations in
which communication can be manifested. It can be face to face interaction, a phone conversation, a group
discussion, a meeting or interview, a letter correspondence, a class recitation, and many others.

Process of Communication
The speaker generates an idea.
The speaker encodes an idea or converts the idea into words or actions.
The speaker transmits or sends out a message.
The receiver gets the message.
The receiver decodes or interprets the message based on the context.
The receiver sends or provides feedback
Barriers can be originated at any point in the communication process. They can be caused by the sender. They
may be found in the message transmission media. They may arise while receiving the message.
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
1. Speaker
- the source of information or message
2. Message
- the information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed by the speaker in wordsor in actions
3. Encoding
-the process of converting the message into words, actions, or otherforms that the speaker understands
4. Channel
- the medium or the means, such as personal or non-personal, verbalor nonverbal, in which the encoded
message is conveyed
5. Decoding
-the process of interpreting the encoded message of the speaker bythe receiver
6. Receiver
- the recipient of the message, or someone who decodes the message
7.Feedback
-the reactions, responses, or information provided by the receiver
8. Context
- the environment where communication takes place
9. Barrier
- the factors that affect the flow of communication
Barriers are factor that affect the flow of communication, we have two types of barrier or it could be external or
internal, when we say external these are the barriers that happens outside it could be a sound of a dog barking, it
could be a sound of people around us, or the sound coming from a vehicle, anything that distract the flow of
communication we called them external barrier.
The other one is the internal noise are the internal barrier. This barrier happens in us, since it is not visible it is
hard for us to control it could be the feelings and motion or anything that hinder a communication process. the
context is the environment when the communication takes place it is also the settings or the situation where
communication process occurs.
Feedback n response
In fact response is like an answer or reply to something, while feedback is like an opinion, perception of the
situation in more general sense. Both are reaction to some information or action, but response is more direct and
personal.
Example 2- An editor made call to one of the reporter about a meeting happening for important news coverage
at 5pm but during his call, noise appeared (transmission error) and reporter received 'we have a meeting about
the important news coverage' ("at 5pm" goes missing due to phone network disruption or noise).
• Sender: Editor
• Encoder: Telephone network company
• Channel: Mobile network
• Noise: Missing time due to disruption
• Decoder: Mobile phone
• Receiver: Reporter Here again reporter asked (feedback) - at what time?
Due to transmission error or noise, reporter can't able to understand Editor's messages. The noise affected the
communication flow between them.
In this situation it clearly deals with external noises only which affect the messages or signals from external
sources.
When can you say a communication was a fail?
Even when communication is consistent, it can fall into the trap of being unclear or inarticulate. This often
happens when there is not a clear and unified direction from management, leading to different interpretations
and conflicting priorities.
