Topic
My Mathematics SBA is ‘What is the average amount of money that a 5th form student
usually spends each school day?’
1

Introduction
Money is a a current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes; coins and
banknotes collectively. Money is essential due to the fact that it provides with everything we
want or need. My reason for choosing the topic is to discover the average amount of money
5th form students of Charles E. Mills Secondary School usually spend each school day to get
an idea of how much money I should spend each day. My main objective is to get an answer
from twenty people on the fifth form block on how much money they usually spend each
school day and from there work out the average.

Method of Data Collection

I will survey 20 people on the fifth form block on how much money they spend on each
school day. I will do such by using a questionnaire that will have a list of each day and have
each student fill out the amount spent on each week. From there, I will just store the data
from the results and insert them into the graphs/charts.
Questionnaire
1. How much money do you spend each week?
A.$0-25 B.$25-50 C.$50-75 D.$75+
2. What do you use most of the money for?
A. Lunch B. Snack C. Bus fare D. Other
3. How necessary do you find spending money to be?
A. Not at all B. Somewhat C. Very D. Extremely

Data analysis
The pie chart shows each percentage of the various amounts of money spent by 5th form
students each week. According to the pie chart, 35% of students spend $1-25 a week, 30% of
students spend $26-50 a week, 25% spend $51-75 a week and 10% of students spend $76-100
a week.
The bar chart shows the frequency of the various amounts of money spent by 5th form
students each week. According to the bar chart, 7 of the 20 students interviewed spend $1-25
a week, 6 of the 20 students interviewed spend $26-50 a week, 5 of the 20 students
interviewed spend $51-75 a week and 2 of the 20 students spend $76-50 a week.

Discussion of Findings
Out of the 20 students interviewed, 7 of them spend $1-25 each week, 6 of them spend $26-
50 each week, 5 of them spend $51-75 each week and 2 of them spend $76-50 each week.
Therefore, the most frequent amount of money spent each week by 5th form students is $1-25
which takes up 35% of the 5th form population. I think this was such because they spent their
money strictly on lunch. The second most frequent amount spent each week by 5th form
students is $26-50 which takes up 30% of the 5th form population. This is probably because
they have to pay bus fare and still buy lunch. The third most frequent amount spent each
week is $51-75 which takes up 25% of the 5th form population. This is probably because they
pay bus fare, buy lunch and also buy snacks. The least frequent is $76-100 amount spent each
week by students which takes up 10% of the 5th form population. This is probably such
because they buy lunch, pay bus fare, buy snacks and most likely they probably spend their
money on other things. By completing the frequency table, it was discovered that the average
amount spent each week by 5th form students is $40.

Conclusion
The average amount of money spent by fifth formers each week is $40. This is mainly
because most students who are on the fifth form block engage their finances mainly on the
essentials which are lunch and bus fare.
