Year 9 Coastal Study – Park Island Beach

Aim:

● To conduct fieldwork at a coastal site, observe a beach using all senses, use a rating system to determine the
overall rating of the beach.

Preparation:

● Analyse rating system to be used (Year 9 - Beach Rating Google Slide)

● Read through instructions and marking rubric to see what is expected in your report.

At the beach:

● You will work in small groups to collect the data. You must decide how you are going to collect and record the
data before you visit the site.

The write up:

This must be done individually and contain the following:

1. Cover Page: This Contains: Title, Appropriate photo, Name(Western and Chinese), Class and Date

2. Introduction: Addresses questions:

(i) Why do we do field work?
(ii) Why is important to analyse a beach and give it a overall grade?
(iii) Where is the beach?
Provide a Map with all appropriate Map Components. (BOLTSS)

3. Aim: Write a response to as why the field trip is an important part of geography and what is the overall aim of the
investigation and purpose of rating a beach

4. Beach Rating Prediction

Before heading to the beach what do you expect to observe? Will it be a good or not so good beach-explain your
response. Your prediction is justified based on geographical knowledge

5. Data presentation and analysis: Present your data in tables and use many different ways to analyze your data.
You can use graphs, maps, photos (annotated), sketches etc.

6. Discussion – Analysis and Explanation of the Results: The coastal site a whole is discussed
Any anomalies in the data collected are discussed and why they might have occurred

7. Conclusion: Conclusion is clear and based wholly on recorded experimental data and is linked to the prediction
and any differences between them is discussed. Specifically addresses the question “What is the condition of the
coastal site?” Include limitations and problems that you might have had and make recommendations for future
surveying.

8. Evaluation: Discussion of how the conclusion could be made more reliable or what further studies could take
place
9. Bibilography: Any resources used must be recorded

NOTE: Your final copy must be presented in a neat and professional manner
