MAXIMUM LOAD OF 8000 lb. (A.) WHAT SHOULD BE ITS DIAMETER IF THE
TOTAL ELONGATION IS NOT TO EXCEED 0.04 in? (B.) CHOOSE A STEEL
THAT WOULD BE SUITABLE ON THE BASIS OF YIELD STRENGTH IF THE
LOAD IS GRADUALLY APPLIED AND REPEATED (NOT REVERSED). (C.)

ULTIMATE STRENGTH; H= 3B. DETERMINE THE DIMENSIONS H AND B IF
THE BAR IS MADE OF (A) GRAY CAST IRON, SAE 111; (B.) MALLEABLE
CAST IRON, ASTM A47-52, GRADE 35 018; (C) AISI C1040, AS ROLLED
SKETCH THE SHEAR AND MOMENT DIAGRAMS APPROXIMATELY TO
SCALE.

CONSIDER THE BELT DRIVE WHICH IS LOADED AS SHOWN BELOW. THE


DRIVE IS ONLY PROVIDED WITH VARIABLE DIMENSIONS AND NO
MATERIALS ARE ASSIGNED FOR EACH OF THE PARTS. WRITE THE
STRESS EQUATION AT EACH OF THE POSSIBLE LOCATIONS OF FAILURE
IDENTIFY EACH STRESS AND WRITE ITS EQUATION IN TERMS OF SHAFT
TORQUE T, AND THE GIVEN DIMENSIONS w,b,h,t, efθ , Lk,Ls,Dp,etc.

USING THE STRESS EQUATIONS FORMED IN PART A,DESIGN THE DRIVE BY
SPECIFYING THE REQUIRED DIMENSIONS OF THE PARTS. THE DRIVE IS TO
TRANSMIT 30 horsepower AT AN ANGULAR SPEED n=1000 npm. THE BELT IS
MADE OF A SYNTHETIC MATERIAL WHOSE DESIGN STRESS IS 500 psi. THE
SHAFT IS MADE OF AISI C1040, NORMALIZED STEEL. THE KEY JOINING THE
SHAFT TO THE PULLEY IS MADE OF AN ANNEALED AISI C1020 STEEL. THE
PULLEY IS MADE OF CAST IRON ASTM 25. CONSIDER A CONTACT ANGLE OF
150 DEGREES AT THE DRIVING PULLEY AND A BELT COEFFICENT OF
FRICTION OF 0.30. USE THE FOLLOWING PROPORTIONS:

CONSIDER A GRADUALLY APPLIED LOAD WITH MILD SHOCK. AS AN OUTPUT


OF PART B, PRESENT A SCALED ISOMETRIC DRAWING (NOT COMPUTER
AIDED) OF THE DRIVE SHOWING ALL THE IMPORTANT DIMENSIONS
PREFERABLY IN THEIR PREFERRED SIZES.
