 PART 1: Synopsis of the role play

A bunch of good friends is planning for the Christmas party which is just
around the corner. They are inspired to party together because it is just not
Christmas without a party. At the same time, they are using this opportunity to meet
their friends. Therefore, they wish to plan to have a great Christmas party.

Felicia, the task leader manages the conversation process during the
discussion by gathering opinions and summing up the discussion. However, Pavitra,
a central negative, is only arguing and giving negative feedback without considering.
Besides Liveshini the questioner asks several questions whereas Meena, an
information provider provides much information regarding the party. Fortunately, Loh
Kit Yee, a social-emotional a leader is a considerate person. She manages to deal
comfortably with everyone.

PART 2: Roles and a brief description of each role

Role 1: Pavitra (Central Negative)

Pavitra plays the central negative role. She argues against most of the proposals
discussed by the others. During the discussion, she argues with Felicia on choosing
the date for having the party by saying “Why? Why must it be Saturday? The
Christmas Party Cannot be Friday or Sunday?”. Despite this, she has a negative
stand on all issues especially when they are planning to have a secret Santa and
she says “What’s that? Sounds complicated! Can’t we just have a simple Christmas
Party?”.

Role 1: Liveshini (Questioner)

 Liveshini plays the role of the questioner, she has the ability to ask questions to her
friends without threatening them. Liveshini asked several questions to clarify the
problems that arose in this discussion. In the discussion, Liveshini asked, “How
many friends should we invite to this Christmas Party?” and “Ok, but… Which exact
date should we choose?” for clarification.

Role 3: Meena (Information Provider)

Meena plays the role of an information provider, who contributes a lot of information
about the discussion to her friends. She says, “Oh! Great! I love to meet new friends!
As I know, new friends can offer different perspectives and open up myself to new
possibilities to her friends who want to clarify regarding the party they want to have.
Besides that, she also adds that “If we held the party on Friday, it will be rushing as
we still have class or work on Friday; if the party is on Sunday, we all will be
exhausted and feel tired on Monday as we still have a class or work on Monday”
politely explained to her friends.

Role 4: Felicia (Task Leader)

Felicia plays the role of the task leader. Felicia is an effective task leader and
communicates in a way that is clear, efficient, and direct where she can solve
conflicts. Felicia comes up with the idea of doing a Christmas party. she discussed
with her friend and voiced out her idea by saying “How about we organize one
Christmas Party for ourselves? Next to organize a party a task leader needs to jot
down and list out throughout the discussion. for instance, “I already marked down
the suggested food list, later I will send the list via email to you all. After receiving the
food list, please send the food list to other guests and ask them to choose 1 food to
prepare. I think we can discuss the decoration matter.”

Role 5: Kit Yee (Social Emotional Leader)

 Kit Yee plays the role of a social-emotional leader who can improve the morale of her
colleagues by reducing tension and resolving conflicts and issues when there is
dissatisfaction, Kit Yee can cool down and maintain the situation between Felicia and
Pavitra by saying “Yes, I agree with Meena. It will be better if the party is on
Saturday. We have enough time to prepare and no need for rushing. We also can
get a good rest on Sunday”. She also added more when there is a problem with food
by saying, “OH. Pavitra had mentioned a problem. Yes, we should avoid this
problem. Errm… We can list out 30 types of food for us to select for preparation. Is
his idea applicable?”
