Poverty: Should We Blame the Individual or the Society?

Poverty exists all around the world and is regarded as a global issue. Poverty happens
when an individual lacks financial resources and struggles to get basic necessities such as food
and shelter. Moreover, if someone is in a state of poverty, is he the one to blame for it?
Regardless of societal inequality, corruption, or political and economic instability, poverty is the
result of an individual's decision in life about what he does and does not do.

Most poor adults did not receive a proper education. According to UNESCO, 171 million
people could be lifted out of extreme poverty if they left school with basic reading abilities.
Published by Statista Research Department in 2019, the illiteracy rate among adults aged 15
years and older was 34.7% in Sub-Saharan Africa. In South Asia the illiteracy rate was 27.1%,
South Asia accounted for 29% of the people living in extreme poverty worldwide. Poor decision-
making as a result of a lack of education can lead an individual to live in poverty.

Families keep populating despite their financial problems. The majority of the world's
poorest countries have the largest families and the highest fertility rates. Families keep
populating despite their financial problems having more children means having more mouths to
feed and will end up giving their children an experience of hunger.

Some would claim that poverty is driven by societal inequality, which occurs when poor
and powerless people do not have equal chances. However, we were all born with the same
opportunities. There are no shortcuts to becoming successful, an individual can easily lose an
opportunity due to a lack of willingness to learn skills and having no goals set in life. An
individual's irresponsibility, gambling, addiction, and greed can lead to poverty.

There are individual aspects in life that are factors to one’s poverty. People’s illiteracy
due to the lack of willingness to learn can end up in poverty. Families without proper application
of family planning would worsen their financial instability. One’s irresponsibility, gambling,
addiction, and greed will all lead to poverty. We must be responsible for our choices in life
because fundamentally, poverty is a denial of choices and opportunities.
