1)
a) (7 points) Find a vector equation for the line in R3 which contains the point ( 1, 5, 7) and is parallel
to the line given by x = 2 + 3t, y = 4 t, and z = 9t.
b) (8 points) Find a standard equation for the plane in R3 which contains the point ( 1, 5, 7) and is
perpendicular to the line given by x = 2 + 3t, y = 4 t, and z = 9t.
2) Suppose that a particle moves in such a way that its position in space, in meters, at time t seconds
is p(t) = (2t3/2 , cos t, sin t), t0 = 2, t1 = 5.
a) (8 points) What is the speed of the particle at time t seconds?
b) (6 points) What is the distance traveled by the particle between times t = 2 and t = 5 seconds?
3) Let g(x, y, z) = exy + x sin z.

4) (9 points) Let F (x, y, z) = x2 z y 2 . Give a standard equation for the tangent plane to the level
surface where F = 1 at the point (1, 2, 3).
5) (10 points each) Suppose that T = T (x, y, z) is a real-valued continuously di↵erentiable function, and
that T (2, 5, 1) = 9 and rT (2, 5, 1) = ( 7, 4, 3). Use this data in all three parts below.
c) Suppose that T (x, y, z) (from above) is the temperature in C at the point (x, y, z) meters. If one
is at the point (2, 5, 1), in what direction, as a unit vector, should one head in order to make the
temperature increase as rapidly as possible? What will be the rate of change of the temperature, with
respect to distance, if one moves in this direction?
6) (10 points) Consider the surface parameterized by r(u, v) = (uv, u + v, u2 + v 2 ). Parameterize the
tangent plane of r at the point (u0 , v0 ) = (1, 3).
7) (10 points) Let f (x, y) = xy 2 6xy + x2 . Find the critical points of f (you should find that there
are 3, all non-degenerate) and classify them as points where f attains a local maximum value, a local
minimum value, or has a saddle point.

1) (20 points) Let R be the region in the first quadrant which is bounded on the left by the y-axis,
bounded on the bottom by the x-axis, and bounded on the top and right by the graph of y = 10 x2 .
Find the maximum and minimum values of f (x, y) = (x 1)(y 2) on the region R.
