Trial Exam Review Lesson 1

Paper 1

1. The mean of the first ten terms of an arithmetic sequence is 6. The mean of the
first twenty terms of the arithmetic sequence is 16. Find the value of the 15th term of
the sequence.

2. Consider the complex numbers 𝑧𝑧 = 1 + 2i and 𝑤𝑤 = 2 + 𝑎𝑎i , where 𝑎𝑎 ∈ ℝ .

Find a when
(a) |𝑤𝑤| = 2|𝑧𝑧|; ;

(b) Re(𝑧𝑧𝑧𝑧) = 2𝐼𝐼𝐼𝐼(𝑧𝑧𝑧𝑧) .

(b) It is given that log 2  𝑦𝑦 + log 4  𝑥𝑥 + log 4  2𝑥𝑥 = 0. Express 𝑦𝑦 in terms of 𝑥𝑥.
Give your answer in the form 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑝𝑝𝑥𝑥 𝑞𝑞 , where p , q are constants.

(c) The region R, is bounded by the graph of the function found in part (b),
the x-axis, and the lines 𝑥𝑥 = 1 and 𝑥𝑥 = 𝛼𝛼 where 𝛼𝛼 > 1. The area of R is 2.
Find the value of 𝛼𝛼.

(b) Hence, find the coefficient of 𝑥𝑥 2 .

5. A point P moves in a straight line with velocity 𝑣𝑣 ms−1 given by

𝑣𝑣(𝑡𝑡) = e−𝑡𝑡 − 8𝑡𝑡 2 e−2𝑡𝑡 at time t seconds, where t ≥ 0.
(a) Determine the first time 𝑡𝑡1 at which P has zero velocity.

(b) Find an expression for the acceleration of P at time t.

(c) Find the value of the acceleration of P at time 𝑡𝑡1 .

(c) (i) Sketch the graph of 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) , found in part (b), for 0 ≤ 𝑥𝑥 ≤ 1.5 .

Determine the coordinates of the point P, the first positive intercept on the x-axis,
and mark it on your sketch.

(ii) The region bounded by the graph of 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) and the x-axis, between
the origin and P, is rotated 360° about the x-axis to form a solid of revolution.
Calculate the volume of this solid.
