SUBJECT1: HAZARD MANAGEMENT

ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

PURPOSE

Occupational safety and health plays an important role in every organisation. The more
accidents occur in the workplace, the higher the operational and legal costs. The purpose of
this assignment is to enable you to evaluate how occupational safety and health can be
implemented in Malaysia. This assignment also enhances your capability in formulating
strategies to prevent and control workplace accidents.

INSTRUCTIONS

This is an individual assignment. You are to visit the official website of the Department of
Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Ministry of Human Resources at
http://www.dosh.gov.my/wps/portal. Study the safety and health policy provided from the
portal. Based on your knowledge and work/life experiences, you are to make a workplace
assessment of the job you have now, have had or would like to have. Use the following
questions to guide your workplace assessment:

1. What are the Malaysian policies for safety and health as stated in the official portal of
DOSH?

2. What are the policies of safety and health in your present, past or future organisation?

3. What risks are inherent in your job?

4. What can you do about them? You should take into consideration possible accidents,
noise, wear and tear on muscles and joints, and psychological conditions.

REQUIREMENTS

Your report should consist of three sections:


Section 1

a) State the Malaysian safety and health policies as provided in the DOSH’s official
website.

b) State the safety and health policies of your present, past or future organisation.

c) State the similarities and differences between the safety and health policies in DOSH
and in your present, past or future organisation.

Section 2

a) Assess the workplace risks of a job you have now, have had or would like to have.

b) Suggest ways to prevent or minimise the workplace risks.

Section 3

Conclude the report by summarising the major workplace risks and the most important
strategies to prevent and control workplace accidents of a job you have now, have had or
would like to have.

GUIDE FOR ANSWERING ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS

i. Guide

You are advised to visit the official website of the Department of Occupational Safety and
Health, Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia at http://www.dosh.gov.my/wps/portal. You
are to study the safety and health policies provided in the website and make a workplace
assessment of a job you have now, have had or would like to have, using your knowledge and
work/life experiences. Next, you are to specify the safety and health policies as stated in the
website and as used in the organisation. You are to highlight the similarities and differences
of safety and health policies between both organisations. You are also to identify and explain

the workplace risks of your job and suggest ways to prevent and control them. You should
take into consideration the possible accidents, noise, wear and tear on muscles and joints, and
psychological conditions. Finally, you are to conclude your report by summarising the major
workplace risks of a job you have now, have had or would like to have, and the most
important strategies to prevent and control them. You are to hand in your final report to your
tutor during Tutorial 4.
