A. Introduction 10 minutes An ANAGRAM is a type of word play. It is the result of rearranging the letters of a word or
phrase to produce a new word or phrase using all the original
letters exactly once.
Example: bear lag can be rearranged into ALGEBRA.
Look for the anagram of the following words which are related in our topic for this week.
1.) riri note
2.) retire ox
3.) cone vx
4.) ven lucidity
5.) pony log
Did you get all the words correctly? Are you familiar with those words?
(See the key on the lower portion of the Assessment)

B. Development 60 minutes Interior Angles of a Polygon

The polygon with more than three sides can be subdivided into triangles by drawing
all the diagonals from one vertex.

Fig. 1 Fig. 2

Can you give how many triangles are formed from the given figure above?

The sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180º. In Figure 1, there are two
triangles. Therefore, 2 x 180º = 360º. While in Figure 2, there are three triangles. So, 3 x
180º = 540º. 360º and 540º are the sums of the interior angles of the polygons. Study the
table below.
No. of △ 𝒔 Sum of the
Polygon No. of sides
Formed interior angles
triangle 3 1 180⁰
quadrilateral 4 2 360⁰
pentagon 5 3 540⁰
hexagon 6 4 720⁰
heptagon 7 5 900⁰
n-gon n n-2 (n-2)180⁰

IV. LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities
Time Frame
As you observed from the table, the number of triangles formed is
always two less than the number of sides. So, to find the sum of the interior angles of the
polygon, you multiply 180º by the number of triangles formed.
Example 1
Find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of an octagon.

Since, octagon has eight sides then (𝑛 − 2) 𝑥 180º = (8-2) x 180º = 6 x 180º = 1,080º.

Remember:

The sum of the measures of the interior angles of any polygon is (n-2)180º, where n
is the number of sides of the polygon.

Exterior Angles of a Polygon

Fig. 3
In the figure above, we draw the exterior angles of the polygon by extending each
sides successively. The interior and the exterior angles at each vertex form a linear pair. As
we had in our previous lesson, the sum of angles of a linear pair is 180º. Let us now find the
sum of the exterior angles of a polygon.
No. of Sum of the Sum of the
Sum of Linear
Polygon Linear interior exterior
Pairs on Vertices
Pair angles angles
triangle 3 3(180º) = 540º 180º 360º
quadrilateral 4 360º 360º
4(180º) = 720º

pentagon 5 540º 360º

5(180º) = 900º

hexagon 6 720º 360º

6(180º) = 1 080º

heptagon 7 900º 360º

7(180º) = 1 260º
n-gon n 180ºn (n-2)180º 360⁰

By observing the table above, we can derive a rule:

𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝑥𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑟 𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒𝑠 = (𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝐿𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑃𝑎𝑖𝑟𝑠 ) − (𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑟 𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒𝑠 )
= 180ºn – (n-2)180º
= 180ºn – 180ºn + 360º
= 360º

Therefore, we can say that no matter how many sides a polygon has, the sum of the
measures of the exterior angles is always 360º.
Example 2

What is the measure of one exterior angle of a regular decagon?

Solution:

The sum of exterior angles of a convex polygon is 360º. So, 360⁰ = 36⁰. Since
10
the given is a regular polygon which means all angles are congruent, then each exterior angle
measures 36⁰.
Example 3
Find the measure of one of the interior angles of a regular polygon with five sides.
Solution:
Again the sum of exterior angles of a convex polygon is 360º. So, 360⁰ =
5
72⁰. One exterior angle measures 72⁰, let us think about of the relationship of the interior
and exterior angles. If the exterior angle is 72⁰, then the interior angle is just the supplement
of 72⁰ which is 180⁰ - 72⁰ = 108⁰.

One of the interior angles of a regular polygon with five sides or a regular
pentagon can also be found by dividing the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a
pentagon with the number of its sides. Earlier we know that the sum of the interior angles of
a pentagon is 540⁰ from the formula (n-
2)180º, dividing it with the number of sides which is five, so we have 540⁰
=
5
108⁰.
