6 SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENT CARRYING CAPACITY 19
OVERVIEW
The present technical specification explains the criteria applied to calculate the size of M.V and L.V.
power cables to be layed in the cold rolling steel plant VSC in VIETNAM.
The main scope is to set up the derating factor to be used in the calculation of current carrying capacity
of power circuits.

The Voltage drop is calculated within the allowed limit, for a lenght of power line up to 100 mt
by the following relation:
Where:
Vd = K(R cosj + X sen j)
L = Line lenght (m)
I = Current (A)
R = Line resistance (W/Km)
X = Line reactance
cosj = Power factor
K = 1,73 for three phase circuit
= 2 for single phase circuit
The cables are calculated for shor circuit withstanding by the following:
S ³(Icc x Öt) /K
Where :
2
S = Conductor cross section (mm )
lcc = Short circuit current (A)
t = Upstreem protection clarification time (assumed 0.5 sec.)
K = Cable type factor. For XLPE (250°) = 143
