The Movie begins at the hospital where Ben attempts a complicated surgery for a german conjoined

twins. The movie then flashes back to show when Ben was an elementary student he got zero on the
test. He is bullied by his white american classmates, he slapped one of them in the mouth and his
mother was called to the principal’s office.

Ben's mother said to Ben and his brother that they are not dumb and that they have gifts given to them
by God that they need to develop and be grateful for it. She also limits their television viewing to
selected shows only and requires them to read books. Ben’s grades rise until he becomes the top
student in his school. At the recognition ceremony, his success was recognized, but a teacher berates his
white classmates for letting a black child from a broken family do better than them.

Ben’s and his family moved to a new house and he transferred to a new school where he is among more
black students. Ben begins to rebel. In a fit of anger, he tried to stab his best friend, but the blade to his
knife breaks on the boy’s belt buckle. Ben comes home and prayed to God for help in overcoming his
temper.

After listening to the missionaries, Ben decides to pursue a career in medicine. Again and again Ben
must overcome his prejudices and let his God-given gift blossom.

As a Grade 12 student there's a lot of values, lessons that I have learned and relate to from watching
this movie such as reading books and limiting distractions can make great results and make us excel to
school.

I have learned that we should never give up and keep trying our best because everything is trial and
errors that we need to overcome to become a better person. I have realized that everyone of us has
God's gift that we need to develop and evolve into a God-fearing better person.

I have also appreciate the work hard of our parents giving the best out of us just like what teacher Jaz
said during our chapel hour that we obey our parents because that is God's order and it will be good for
us.
