The Eniment Five Set For A Summer Holiday
The Eniment Five Set For A Summer Holiday
CHAPTER ONE
All set for a summer holiday
Four children were singing at the top of their voices in a car that was going up a
steep mountain-side road. The man at the wheel turned and grinned. ‘‘I say! I
can’t even hear the car hooter. What’s the matter with you all?’’. The children
shouted answers to him.
‘‘It’s the beginning of the holidays!’’
‘‘The lovely summer holidays are stretching before us!’’
‘‘Pop goes the weasel!’’ That was Kiki, the parrot of course!
‘‘We love summer time and today is just the second day of the holidays!’’
In the car sat Philip and Dinah Mannering, with their mother Allie Mannering.
Jack and Lucy-Ann Trent also sat in the car with them. They had no father or
mother as their parents died in an aeroplane crash. They were firm friends of
Philip and Dinah and shared their mother with them. They went to boarding
school with Philip and Dinah. Dinah and Philip had no father, and Philip often
wished that he had known him because he was very like him in animal studies.
He could take animal with him, and all the animals loved and trusted him at
once and came to him, lovingly and confidently. As Philip was good with
animals, Jack was good in the same way with birds. If Philip, Dinah, or Lucy-
Ann went too near a bird’s nest, it would get scared and fly away. But the birds
let Jack touch it without moving a feather. It was indeed very strange. Now they
were going off to a place where they would enjoy a lot.
