NORMALISATION EXPLAINED Odisha Staff Selection Commission, (ot.33.12.2022), (For Explanatory/ Educational purpose only. This is not an Order or Resolution) 1. What is normalisation? Normalisation is the process of rationalising or equalising the marks scored by Candidates in different shifts. This is done by evaluating their marks on a common : scale. 2. Whenis normalisation used? When same examination is conducted in different shifts using different question sets, in MCQ mode, Normalisation is used. In its detailed Advertisement, OSSC mentions if normalisation is likely to be used. 3. Whyis normalisation necessary? * To maintain uniformity in the selection process and judge the merit of the candidates on a common notation.lt is almost impossible to set question of same difficulty in all shifts. (If examination is conducted in 20 shifts, 20 set of questions are required). : * Candidates may be evaluated unfairly if the paper they got in their shift is comparatively tougher than other shifts. To end this unfairness and disparity in candidates’ scores, normalisation has been introduced. What is the effect of normalisation on raw scores? Normalised scores may be less or more than raw score. * The marks of candidates who get a tough paper in their st after normalization. * The marks of candidates who get a easy paper in their shift can decrease after normalization. can increase 5. Which Examinations/ Recruitment agencies use Normalisation? a) Recruitment Agencies like Staff Selection Commission, IBPS, Indian Air force, Railway Recruitment Board, State Recruitment Agencies (PSC as well as SSC) use normalization, if an MCQ examination is repeated in many shifts. b) Educational Examination like NEET, JEE, OJEE use normalisation, since their examination is repeated in many shifts. 6 Where do | get more information about Normalisation methods being using by ossc?
