I. Intended Learning Outcomes/Objectives:

Through the varied activities, the Grade 3 students with at least 75% accuracy are
expected to:
a. define compound words;
b. recognize the characteristics of compound words and how they are formed; and
c. write sentences using compound words.

II. Learning Content

Subject Matter: Compound Words

Materials: Objects which name are composed of compound words.


Strips of paper that have one word on it.
Worksheets for evaluation.

III. Learning Experiences

A. Activity
1. The teacher will show 4 GIFs and the students will name them.
2. The teacher will let the students analyze and discover the words.

B. Analysis
1. The teacher will ask the following questions:
a. What do you notice about these words?
b. What do you think are these words?
c. How many root words are there in a word?

C. Abstraction
1. The teacher will further discuss the topic.

Compound Words
Compound words are formed by joining two or more simple words to create a
new word.

Examples:
Three Different Types of Compound Words
1. Closed compound words
Words don’t have any spaces between the two combined words.
Examples: firefly, keyboard, notebook, makeup

2. Hyphenated compound words


Words are joined together by a hyphen.
Examples: daughter-in-law, over-the-counter

3. Open compound words


Words have a space between the words but when they are read together a
new meaning is formed.
Examples: post office, full moon, ice cream

D. Application

The students will practice creating compound words through a game “My
Perfect Match”. This is by using flashcards that have one word on each. The
students will roam around the classroom and find his or her perfect match to
form a new compound word. After doing so, each pair must use the new
compound word in a sentence and share it to the class.

IV. Assessment
A. Name the two pictures in each number to form a compound word. Use the compound word in a
sentence and write it on the lines.

B. Read and analyze the following sentences and encircle the compound words.

V. Assignment
In a lecture notebook, list 3 examples of each type of compound words and use them
in a meaningful sentence.
