Part 1 – Introduction

In Appendix 1, Jeffrey Preston Bezos also known as Jeff Bezos who born in
Albuquerque, New Mexico, the USA on January 12, 1964. He is an American entrepreneur
who is the founder and CEO of Amazon. Amazon is an online bookseller, and online retailer
of various products (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2022).

He realized that buying or selling products and services on the Internet would be a
huge exploration and development area. To this end, he founded Amazon, an e-commerce
company in 1995. In 1997, Amazon’s success has made it one of the most important
companies on the Internet. In addition, he also manages to conquer the internet business.
(History-biography, 2022).

As the largest shareholder of Amazon, he still retains considerable control of the

company which he founded in Seattle garage in 1995. His equities in Amazon are worth
about $180 billion. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, resigned after Donald Trump was
elected president. After retiring from the position of CEO of Amazon, he becomes the
executive chairman of the company (ICSTD, 2022).

A skill that makes Bezos a great success is deconstructing products, processes, and
ideas. Before the Internet was taken seriously, he read an article that said that the Internet
grew by 2,300% annually. Therefore, he deconstructs the traditional delivery business
process, and “The Earth’s Biggest Bookstore” was born. Besides that, Bezos also accepts new
and unique experiences. He accepts new experiences as a way of participating in interactive
learning. He may never have thought that disassembling his grandfather’s Caterpillar tractor
would lay the foundation for his destructive thinking in the future. It is because different
experiences allow divergent thinking, and increase the innovative ability (Gregersen, 2015).

13
Here are the achievements of Jeff Bezos. In 2011, he was awarded an Innovation
Award by an Economist. After that, he was named entrepreneur of the year by Fortune
magazine in 2012 (Appendix 2). In 2011 and 2012, he was a member of the executive
committee of the Business Council. In 2018, he appeared on the Forbes list with an estimated
net worth of $106 billion.

Bezos also won the best CEO award in the world from Harvard Business Review
(Appendix 3). He was also rated as one of the 50 best leaders in the world by Fortune
magazine (Appendix 4). In September 2016, he won the Heinlein Prize for the progress of
space marketing (Appendix 5). Since 2017, he has seen the growth of Amazon’s stock that
rose by greater than 130% which made him gain more than $100 billion. After that, Bezos
became the richest man in the world (History-biography, 2022).

14
Part 2 – 4 Leadership Traits of Jeff Bezos

First and foremost, the first leadership trait of Jeff Bezos is he has an innovative and
creative mindset. The best leader seldom follows laid-out pathways or duplicates the courses
others have taken. All things considered, they embrace better approaches for thinking and
systems that others presently can't seem to attempt. As a pioneer, Bezos should plan to focus
on inventiveness so he can explore different avenues regarding imaginative arrangements and
elective ways to deal with arriving at objectives (Indeed Editorial Team, 2021). For example,
Jeff Bezos makes Amazon Go grocery store. Due to the popularity of e-commerce sites,
selling foods online is difficult. Even PeaPod, which has occupied this space for several
decades, does not have grocery stores in brick-and-mortar grocery stores. Fortunately for
Amazon, he put two and two together and decided that online grocery stores were no longer
an option and created Amazon Go (Appendix 6) (Cawley, 2017).

Apart from that, the leadership trait of Jeff Bezos is he does not be afraid of being
rejected. The word “rejection” is not meaning as “failure”, but it shows that your work has
not found its destination (Khairalla, 2022). For example, the failure of Amazon ‘Fire Phone’
(Appendix 7). In 2010, Amazon was worried about the revenue loss of mobile app stores.
They decided to try to connect mobile users directly to their products to solve financial
problems. When Amazon launched the Fire Phone in 2014, this idea became a reality and it
proved to be a failure because of improper planning. As a result, Amazon admitted failure,
and Fire Phone stopped producing just 3 months after its launch. Thus, Amazon has lost $170
million in the research and development of the Fire Phone. However, Bezos believes that
when the company becomes complacent, it will not continue to try and will not embrace
failure (Ian, 2021).

Moreover, the third leadership trait of Jeff Bezos is he is a risk-taker when he

manages his company. There is nothing great that ever comes from our comfort zone.
Usually, the best ideas are achieved through experiments. In the process of making Amazon
successful, Bezos has taken some bold steps in decision-making. According to him, even if
we fail in our adventure, it’s still a success. It is because we can learn something else from
taking that risk (Khan, 2021). For example, Bezos had decided to fire up his own business.

15
He had no cash, and the main financial backers he had were his folks. He realizes that there
was a 70% opportunity for disappointment, yet his persistence didn't let him back down from
the gamble. Today he is perhaps the most extravagant man on the planet, and his quality of
facing a serious challenge hasn't subsided. The presentation of Kindle against the iPad is a
distinctive worldview exhibiting Bezos's trying character (Appendix 8 & 9) (Editorial Staff,
2019).

Lastly, Jeff Bezos also always thinks long-term. When he doesn’t run Amazon, his
passing time includes helping to develop a 10,000-year clock. He claims that the purpose was
to symbolize the importance of long-term thinking (Khairalla, 2022). For instance, he
mentioned that he always thinks three years ahead and only makes a few good decisions per
day and this is critical for a CEO. That was different when Amazon was a start-up in the mid-
1990 and he need to make hundreds of decisions per day and even package shipments and
deliver the goods to the post office by himself. When Amazon went public in 1997, the
number of employees of the company increased from 158 to 614 people. Nowadays, Amazon
has more than 1 million employees around the world (Scipioni, 2021). Thus, he has to think
long-term about his company.

16
Part 3 – Leadership Style and 2 Benefits

The leadership style of Jeff Bezos is as a transformational leader. Transformational

leadership is a kind of leadership style, in which leaders encourage, inspire and motivate
employees to innovate and create change, which will contribute to the development of the
company and shape its future success. This is achieved by establishing a strong sense of
corporate culture, employee ownership and independence in the workplace, and setting an
example in the management (White, 2018).

This leadership style represented Bezos has accepted the changing market trends with
pleasure. While Amazon at first started selling books, it has been extended to almost all
products in the market. For example, Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods (Appendix 10),
making of no-checkout supermarkets (Appendix 11), and staple memberships through
conveyance (Rigby, 2022).

The first benefit of as a transformational leader is solving problems. Compared to

transactional leadership which all the decisions and problem-solving are done by the leader,
the transformational leader is much better. The most important aspect of transformational
leadership is fostering collaboration among team members. This enables the team members to
learn more, be more creative and put forward new ideas more often than any other way
(Gentle, 2021).

Moreover, the second benefit of as a transformational leader is that can improve

communication. In most workplaces, a worrying problem comes down to how leaders
communicate with their employees. If employees do not have the right information about
their role, the requirements of a project, and the expectations of managers, they cannot do
their jobs as intended. One of the main benefits of transformational leadership is that
managers must provide feedback to team members regularly to ensure that they keep in the
right direction. Thus, this can promote better communication, and the result is better resulted
(Gentle, 2021).

17
Part 4 – 5 Sources of Leader Power

The first leader power that Jeff Bezos might use to influence others is legitimate
power. Based on Appendix 12, the organizational hierarchy structure shows that Bezos is the
CEO of Amazon. Bezos can use this leader power to influence others is because his position
in Amazon is very high and powerful as he is the CEO. Therefore, he can use this power to
do anything about the company and the employees. For example, Bezos has set up a “3
question hiring test” to hire his employees. It is because he is the CEO of the company, so he
has the right to do this in order to hire responsible and high-quality employees (Danial,
2019). In addition, Bezos also has the right to assign the projects to his employees and
monitor the employees’ work in the company.

Furthermore, the second leader power that Jeff Bezos might use to influence others is
reward power. The CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos has provided a lot of learning opportunities,
career development opportunities, and a positive working environment to his employees and
workers to motivate them (ICSTD, 2022). In other words, the Amazon employees also are
provided financial success. For example, the full-timer, part-timer, seasonal employees, and
contractors, can get their hourly salary at least $15 per hour. In addition, the employees also
have potential chances to own the Amazon stock, join paid life insurance, and have mishap
protection. Financial consultation and estate planning services are also provided, and paid
short-term and long-term disability services are also provided if necessary (Amazon, 2022).

Coercive power is also one of the sources of leader power. As we all know, Amazon
has a very stressful and demanding work culture. There are many stories of Amazon
employees having a nervous breakdown due to work stress. If the employees' performance is
not up to standard, or they don't accept the company culture, they will soon be fired. As the
CEO of Amazon, Bezos can cut off the salary and fire the employees if they are not obeying
the order. An example of Bezos firing an employee, Sarah Matloff who is an employee of
Amazon recently received a bone marrow transplant to treat rare aplastic anemia. She sent an
email to Jeff Bezos to complain about her boss bullied her several times during treatment.
Soon, Matloff was fired immediately by Jeff Bezos when he was realized that the email was
completely insincere (RUNT, 2022).

18
Besides that, the fourth leader power that Jeff Bezos might use to influence others is
expert power. When Bezos was a child, he spent his summer fixing the windmills and
hardware on his grandparents’ farm in Texas. Nowadays, Bezos credits his summers dabbling
with farm hardware for his propensity for trial and error. Therefore, he pushed Amazon to
maintain its rule as the most successful online retail company in the world (Gregersen, 2015).
In addition, in early December 2013, Bezos disclosed a new experimental plan of Amazon,
called "Amazon Prime Air", which to provide delivery services to customers. These drones
can convey things weighing as much as five pounds and can going inside a 10-mile distance
of the company (Appendix 13) (Biography, 2018).

Last but not least, referent power is the last leader power that Jeff Bezos might use to
influence others. According to Appendix 14, Bezos is the top 2 of the 15 most admired
people in Technology in the year 2016 (Dhiraj, 2016). It is because he is an individual who
has had an extraordinary outcome in the realm of business by establishing Amazon (Merlin,
2022). Here is the example of referent power about Bezos. Everybody knows about Bezos for
being something other than the Founder and CEO of Amazon. The entrepreneur deserves the
admiration and certainty of thousands of Amazon workers around the world. His hard-
working attitudes, authority characteristics, and values make him charming to all (Das, 2021).
