Moles & Reactions Involving Gas

1. What does rtp means? What value does it have?

rtp means room temperature and pressure at 20°C and 1 atmosphere

2. What does molar volume mean, for a gas?

1 mole of gas with volume 24 dm3 atoms or molecules

3. What is the molar volume of neon gas at rtp?

24 dm3

4. For any gas, calculate the volume at rtp of:

a. 7 moles: 7 moles x 24 dm3 = 168 dm3

b. 0.5 moles: 0.5 moles x 24 dm3 = 12 dm3

c. 0.001 moles: 0.001 moles x 24 dm3 = 0.024 dm3

5. Calculate the volume at rtp of:

a. 16 g of oxygen, O2:
Mr of O2: 16x2= 32 g/mol
16 g / 32 g mol-1 = 0.5 mol
0.5 mol x 24 dm3/mol = 12 dm3

b. 1.7 g of ammonia (NH3):

Mr of NH3: 14 + (4x1) = 17 g/mol
1.7 g / 17 g mol-1 = 0.1 mol
0.1 mol x 24 dm3/mol = 2.4 dm3

6. You burn 6 grams of carbon in plenty of air:
C (s) + O2 (g)  CO2 (g)
a. What volume of gas will form (at rtp)?
6 g / 12 g mol-1 = 0.5 mol
0.5 mol x 24 dm3/mol = 12 dm3

b. What volume of oxygen will be used up?

0.5 mol x 24 dm3/mol = 12 dm3

7. If you burn the carbon in limited air, the reaction is different:

2C (s) + O2 (g)  2CO (g)
a. What volume of gas will form this time (at rtp)?
6 g / 12 g mol-1 = 0.5 mol
0.5 mol x 24 dm3/mol = 12 dm3

b. What volume of oxygen will be used up?

½ x 0.5 mol = 0.25 mol
0.25 mol x 24 dm3/mol = 6 dm3

8. Nitrogen monoxide reacts with oxygen like this:

2NO (g) + O2 (g)  2NO2 (g)
a. How many moles of oxygen molecules react with 1 mole of nitrogen
monoxide molecules?
½ x 1 mol = 0.5 mol

b. What volume of oxygen will react with 50 cm3 of nitrogen monoxide?

½ x 50 cm3 = 25 cm3

c. Using the volumes in b, what is:

i. the total volume of the two reactants?
50 cm3 + 25 cm3 = 75 cm3

2
ii. the volume of nitrogen dioxide formed?
50 cm3
