Lesson title: Easter Vocab Topic Content Area: Mathematics & Topic

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Lesson Idea/Topic and Every couple of weeks we change to a new unit topic and this week we
Rational/Relevance: are finishing up with Easter vocabulary (not religiously affiliated). Students
are learning words like bunny, basket, egg, chocolate, flowers, rainbow,
and chick. Students will have a worksheet of different easter vocabulary
pictures and a number associated with them. Phase 2 students will roll 1
dice while phase 3 children will roll 2 dice and must add their numbers up
(two different sheets). The teacher will wait for students to locate the
correct number and picture and then go over the phonetic spelling of the
word (# of sounds, sounds, and blend) and then students will put their
objects into their basket.

Student Profile: Students are 4, 5, and 6 years old and are all ELL’s. Literacy lessons are
done with phase 2 (4y/o) and phase 3 (5 & 6y/o) separated. Students
need high interactive activities and lessons to stay engaged and benefit
from movement.

Content Standard(s) addressed by this lesson: (Write Content Standards directly from the standard)

Mathematics - Number Concepts and Quantities: 1.10. Recognize and, with support, write some
numerals up to 10.

Mathematics - Operations and Algebraic Thinking: 2.3 With adult assistance, begin to use counting on
(adding 1 or 2, for example) from the larger number for addition. (Phase 3)

Language Development- Vocabulary: 3.1. Understand and use a wide variety of words for a variety of
purposes.

Understandings: (Big Ideas)

Identify numbers 0-12

Use the add on method to solve addition problems

Learn, remember and use different Easter topic vocabulary words

Inquiry Questions: (Essential questions relating knowledge at end of the unit of instruction, select
applicable questions from standard)

Can you tell me what this number is?

If this number is too big for my fingers to add, how can I solve this problem?
Can you tell me what this picture is?

Evidence Outcomes: (Learning Targets)

Every student will be able to: (Create your own lesson objectives from the standard using student voice)

Mathematics

I can: use two numbers to add them together

This means: I can identify numbers and add them together

Language Development

I can: use vocabulary in different contexts

This means: I use Easter vocabulary in the classroom and at home

Assessment outline:

Assessment looking at number identification, adding & vocab review (document all 3)

Lesson Details

Materials: Basket worksheet, 1 dice (for group)

Time: 15 minutes (small group)

Teacher Actions Student Actions

Teacher will introduce the activity by telling

students we are continuing to learn more about
vocabulary that we see around easter time.

***Give instructions: “each of you will get a

sheet with a basket on it and I have a sheet with
some easter objects on it. The sheet with the
easter objects on it has numbers that go with
each picture. We are going to roll the dice twice,
add them together, see what number we get,
find the matching picture, and put it into our
basket.”

Start by having a super sitter roll the dice twice Students will identify the number
and see what numbers they get (add them
together). Ask them which picture it goes with, Students will identify word associated with the
review that vocabulary, and give the students the picture
object.
Students will put the object in their basket

Show students how the objects name is written Identify sounds, segment the word, and blend the
and break it down phonetically. sounds together.

***Repeat!

Put objects back in the correct buckets while Students will color their baskets with newly
reviewing vocab. reviewed vocabulary!

Differentiation

Modifications Extensions

Use 1 dice and 1st worksheet Use 2 dice to add and use 2nd worksheet

Use manipulatives to count Have them help you phonetically spell the word

Assessment
Post Lesson Reflection

1. To what extent were lesson objectives achieved? (Utilize assessment data to justify
your level of achievement)

Most (95%) of students achieved the lesson objectives based on informal assessment done
during the lesson. The Easter vocabulary that was introduced this week was revisited and all
students were able to identify these vocabulary words. For the mathematics objective, most
students achieved this objective, but I recorded where I noticed growth areas for students in
my assessment. Students who need to revisit certain numbers were documented, but overall
the lesson objectives were achieved. (YAY!)

2. What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you were to
teach again?

One change that I would do for this lesson next time would be to give myself more time to do
all small groups. I didn’t get to the phase 2 students until the next day (time is always hard). I
also added during the lesson some review on sounds and phonics which was beneficial because
topic lessons are a great time to assess literacy and math knowledge in a different context.
Another thing I would do for the practicality of the lesson would be to do this lesson inside
because the little objects were flying away.

I also did some subtraction with students which went extremely well and made me realize this
extension should be added into more lessons!

3. What do you envision for the next lesson? (Continued practice, reteach content, etc.)

Although Easter topic is coming to an end, all of the vocabulary that we learned is used in
everyday situations and often in Spring. For my next topic lesson (after the success of this one) I
want to continue to add in literacy and math skills because of the benefit the review had with
students. For Easter vocabulary, during the 7 senses (an activity we do every morning) there is a
part where we do recall of the vocabulary we have been using, which we will use for continued
practice.

4. If you used co-teaching, would you use the same co-teaching strategy for this lesson if
you were to teach it again? Were there additional co-teaching strategies used during
the lesson not planned for initially? Please explain.
