Steel is a metal component design to further strengthen structures by carrying loads.

Although steel provide rigidity, there are a lot steel can do such as the steel’s properties don’t
change when it’s being welded. The steel has an extremely high-tension strength and its
ability to handle deformation is remarkable as it doesn’t increase its stress in the process. This
material is also durable enough to undergo inelastic deformation without fracture and it can
absorb large amounts of energy with ease.

There’s a lot steel can do but it’s not for all around use in terms of construction, as we
known steel have an impressive strength when it comes to resisting tensile stress, it doesn’t
necessarily takes a lot of time to construct when compared to other building methods, the
chances of it being reused is quite high as its strength is extremely formidable, the
construction made by steel are almost air-tight which will lessen problems, and it can be
easily attach to already existing structures adding the possibility of reconstructing another
connection within that infrastructure. Steel is impressive as it can do all those impressive
things but as stated, it still has some downside. Steel is susceptible to corrosion and is more
likely to have a high maintenance cost, it requires a lot of skill since one mistake can make
the project to fail, fireproofing cost is high as steel is a heat conductor and the chance of it
being the fire source is quite high.

Different types of steel sections

 Rolled angle section – used for structure such as trusses.
 Rolled channel section - known for steel framing.
 Rolled T section – support concrete slabs and reinforce concrete bars.
 Rolled I section – used for beams and columns.
 Rolled round bars – a regular steel that is rounded to make it easier to work with.
 Rolled square bars – can be used for repairs or barriers for doors and windows.
 Rolled flat bars – acts as a support for bracings.
 Rolled steel plates – strengthen foundations.
 Ribbed bars HYSD – have a high tensile strength and it is made with heat treatment.
 Ribbed mild steel – used for reinforcement for concrete.
 Rolled TMT bars – concrete reinforcement with high bar strength.
 Welded wire fabrics – strengthen slabs and provide reinforcement

Welded connection all you to connect steel into one by means of welding but
transporting it to site might be an issue. On the other hand, bolted connection doesn’t require
the worker to transport large amounts of like the welded connection on site. It is cheaper and
faster compared to welded connection.
