INTRODUCTION

Silliman University has almost every designated avenue for the

sports the school offers. We have our own basketball court for basketball
players, a ball field for soccer players, and even our own swimming pool for
our swimmers. The only venue we’re lacking is a running track for our track
and field athletes. Although Dumaguete City already has a public running
track, it’ still a great idea for our University to install one of our own. The
Cimafranca Ballfield would be the perfect place to install a running track.

The only venue we’re lacking is a running track for our track and field
athletes. Although Dumaguete City already has a public running track or the
so called "oval", it’s still a great idea for our University to install one of our
own ,since the running track will be exclusively for sillimanians only. Instead
of paying for the entrance fee of 10 pesos for the oval, sillimanians can enjoy
the running track for free.

We choose to make a running track since it really helps the athletes and
anyone who joggs in a lot of ways. Ways that a normal concrete or dirt just
couldn't support or have. Imagine running and instead of feeling tired
immediately, you still can keep running. The running track can also be used
in school events such as intramurals, competitions, and Physical education
classes.

II. RATIONALE
The Cimafranca ball field is such a huge venue for sports and other
physical activities; unfortunately, we haven’t been maximizing its use and so
much potential for the place is being wasted. The ball field is big enough go
cater to just one sport and so much empty space is still unused. The venue is
so underused for its size which shouldn’t be the case. It’s unfair to have more
than 5 basketball courts while other sports have yet to receive an appropriate
venue despite the amount of available space we have. Because of these, our
group has agreed to propose the installment of a running track around the
Cimafranca ball field.

We need a running track for many reasons. One of the reason is because
our track and field athletes have no designated venue within Silliman’s
premises. Most of our track and field athletes are Elementary and Junior High
School students whose training time are held after class hours in the Macias
Oval Complex. This means their travel is further, longer and more dangerous
compared to if we were to have our own running track. It’s not only their
travel that would be dangerous, but also their stay in the Macias Oval
Complex while they’re training. They usually place their bags in one area out
in the open which leaves their belongings prone to stealing. These problems
also apply to non athlete students who just want to exercise and for when we
have our running events in our intramurals.

During rainy seasons, it’s difficult to do any physical activities on dirt,

especially if that activity is running. It’s hard enough to try and avoid
puddles when walking, how much more for when you’re jogging or running.
Getting your shoes dirty is one thing, but imagine tripping and falling face
first on the muddy surface while still needing to continue your training. Not
only would it be embarrassing, it would also be a huge inconvenience to
wash yourself and your clothes, especially if you’re an ROTC student.
Although getting dirty is normal during training for sports and ROTC, why
not avoid it if we can?

III. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Goals and Objectives
Our main goal is to help and support student athletes in their
extra-curricular activities and for their improvement in their specified
sports. The objectives are:
 To be able to have a running track specifically for
Sillimanians
 To have a better track for competitions
 To bring convenience and comfort overall to the runner and
athletes in general
 To provide students a place to jog or do sports with ease
 To reduce injuries and to enhance the speed of runners
 To help athletes learn to sprint in different circumstances

Location
The proposed running track will be located at the Silliman
Cimafranca ball field. The Cimafranca ball field is the best location to
place the running track because of its size. It is the perfect location for the
running track because of the wideness of the ball field. There is an excess
space around the ball field that is perfect for the running track to be
installed. That excess space can be widened for the four lanes of the
running track.

Methodology and Timeline

The space around the ball field will be maximized for the running
track and will be shaped as an oval. The running track will be rubberized
and will only have four lanes instead of eight lanes since the ball field’s
space is limited.

The material that will be used for the running track is the tartan
track. Tartan track is a trademarked all-weather synthetic track surfacing
made of polyurethane used for track and field competitions. It is the most
recommended material for running tracks. Synthetic tracks offer good
shock absorption, like grass and dirt tracks do, but they also do not make
runners lose speed, as soft natural surfaces do. Synthetic tracks are called
fast tracks because they are comfortable to run on with an underlying
firmness that prevents a loss of speed. These surfaces also offer good
traction, even in inclement weather, which is not the case with natural
surfaces that change depending on the weather. This all-weather quality
made training and competition more consistent, allowing athletes to
pursue uninterrupted training for longer periods of time despite the
changing of the seasons.

The duration of the construction will also depend on the weather.

Most likely, it will take 1-2 months or 40 days for the running track to be
installed. It will be installed in summer, April-May 2020. On these dates
are the best time to install it because of the sunny weather that will make
the construction and the drying faster. We will be needing 8 workers for
the installation of the running track in order to fulfil the allotted time for
this project.

The running track will be 400 meters. It will have four lanes with a
width of 4.88m. Each lane will have a width of 1.22m. Curb dimension
will be 5 cm x 5 cm. Measure lane 1 will be 30 cm out from inner border of
track with curb; 20 cm out from inner border of track with no curb. Other
lanes to be measured 20 cm out from outer edges of left hand lane lines.
All race distances are measured from the edge of the 5 cm wide starting
line farther from the finish line to the edge of the 5 cm wide finish line
nearer the start. Race courses must be the prescribed distance or longer.
No tolerance is allowed for under-distance. There will be no finish line
location. General practice is to place this line at the juncture of the straight
and curve (or within 10 meters of it) so that all athletes in lane races run
nearly the same distance on the curve.

A tartan track has a life span of 10 years. In order to maintain the

condition of the running track, it should undergo a regular maintenance.
For the daily maintenance of the running track, we will be needing at least
1 worker in sweeping, brushing, removing dirt, leaves and litter. Every 4
months, the running track should undergo surface cleaning which include
weed, algae and moss treatments, jet washing, brushing and removing
debris or dirt, and repairing minor damage as soon as possible.

The running track opening schedule is at 5 am and it will close at 8

pm. We think that it is best to open the ball field at 5 am that way if you
want to jog before you start you day you can and since the earliest classes
start at 7 you have at least 1 hour of jogging. We also think that it is best to
close it by 8 pm that way it is not very late at night and you can still get
home safely.

This running track will be under the Physical Education

Department since this department can benefit from this project. Physical
Education classes can also be held there for cardiovascular endurance
tests, cardiovascular strength tests and etc.
Statement of Benefits

There are some schools and universities in the Philippines that

have running tracks has been beneficial for student athletes for their usual
training and practices, especially on their upcoming competitions.
Running tracks have played a big role for athletes and students because of
the many benefits it provide.

Silliman providing their own running track would be a huge

benefit for its students, athletes and even teachers who want to exercise.
One of the benefits they would experience is a closer training ground. The
athletes would no longer have to go further away from Silliman’s
premises which could save them more time and energy when traveling
and would be safer compared to going to the Macias Oval Complex.
Having our own running track would give our athletes and other users
comfort because of the security and exclusiveness it provides. This would
then enhance our athlete’s performance and motivate them to pursue their
sport even more. The students would also benefit from this because they
would have an appropriate venue for cardiovascular endurance exercises
and activities such as our intramural. This may also encourage students to
be more physically active and engaged in exercises and possibly even
encourage them to join a sport.

An advantage we can get from a running track is its

comfortability compared to jogging on dirt and concrete. This is because it
is much softer on the feet which would enable its users to continue
jogging for longer amount of time and distances. Since we would be using
a tartan track which is an all-weather synthetic track surfacing, Jogging on
it would also be really useful during rainy seasons. Considering how
uncomfortable it is to run on dirt when it’s wet, a running track would be
highly beneficial. It’s so much less messy and it’s easier on the feet which
allows progress for P.E. classes, ROTC and sport trainings to commence
when it would normally be postponed due to a wet field.

Another benefit is the fact that the running track would be placed in the
Cimafranca ball field which is right next to the Silliman University
Medical Center. This benefit is rather coincidental because it was never
our intention to place the running track near a medical facility in case of
unfortunate instances. Nonetheless, this coincidence is highly beneficial
considering how running and long distance jogging competitions is prone
to problems such as accidents, heat strokes, and more. It would be much
easier and faster to call for help and treat a person who has been harmed.
This project would highly benefit the school in a sense that it would
attract more students. It’s been a long time since the Cimafranca ball field
has had a makeover. A running track around the soccer area would be
enough to give the Cimafranca ball field life and much more purpose
other than a soccer field and a venue for the ROTC. Considering how
there isn’t a university in Dumaguete that has their own running track,
Silliman would be the first to have one if this project goes through.
Through this our school would be able to attract people in a sense that we
would be able to hold events and competitions in our own premise.
