Step 1 1 of 13

Let X be a non-zero number.

For the quantities of format X000, we

don't consider the 0 at the left of X as
significant figures (s.f.). We only
consider the non zeros and zeros
between non-zeros as s.f. .

In the case of the format X.0, we

consider the zero at the right of the
decimal to be significant.

Step 2 2 of 13

If we round off a number to a certain

number of s.f., we consider the digit at
the immediate right of the last digit that
belong to a number of s.f.

For example, we round off 134 to 2 s.f.,

we consider 4 which is the immediate
right of 3, the last digit that belong to 2
s.f.

Step 3 3 of 13

When the digit on its right is 5 or

greater, we round up i.e. we add 1 to
the digit and all the remaining digits on
its right becomes 0 or are removed if its
in the decimal place.

Otherwise, we round down i.e. the digit

remains the same and all the remaining
digits on its right becomes 0 or are
removed if its in the decimal place.

Step 4 4 of 13

a) The digit to be considered in 48599

to 1 s.f. is 8.

Digit 8 is in the range 5 or greater, thus

round up. The number becomes 50000.

Step 5 5 of 13

b) The digit to be considered in 48599

to 3 s.f. is 9.

Digit 9 is in the range 5 or greater, thus

round up. The number becomes 48600.

Step 6 6 of 13

c) The digit to be considered in 6841 to

1 s.f. is 8.
Digit 8 is in the range 5 or greater, thus
round up. The number becomes 7000.

Step 7 7 of 13

d) The digit to be considered in 7538

to 2 s.f. is 3.

Digit 3 is in the range 4 or lower, thus

round down. The number becomes
7500.

Step 8 8 of 13

e) The digit to be considered in 483.7

to 1 s.f. is 8.

Digit 8 is in the range 5 or greater, thus

round up. The number becomes 500.

Step 9 9 of 13

f) The digit to be considered in 2.5728

to 3 s.f. is 2.

Digit 2 is in the range 4 or lower, thus

round down. The number becomes
2.57.

Step 10 10 of 13

g) The digit to be considered in 990 to

1 s.f. is 9.
Digit 9 is in the range 5 or greater, thus
round up. The number becomes 1000.

Step 11 11 of 13

h) The digit to be considered in 2045 to

2 s.f. is 4.
Digit 4 is in the range 4 or lower, thus it
should be round down.

However, since 2000 has only 1 s.f., we

just round up the value so it becomes
2100 which has 2 s.f.

Step 12 12 of 13

i) The digit to be considered in 14.952

to 1 s.f. is 4.

Digit 4 is in the range 4 or lower, thus

round down. The number becomes 10.

Result 13 of 13

a. 50000 b. 48600 c. 7000 d. 7500 e.

500 f. 2.57 g. 1000 h. 2100 i. 10
