Y Objective
THEOR To determine the center of pressure and hydrostatic force due to water
acting on a partially and fully submerged vertical surface.
Center of pressure is the point where the total sum of a pressure field acts on a body, causing a force to act
through that point.

This experiment uses a fabricated quadrant and a simple moment equation in order to justify the hydrostatic
force acting on the surface. By measuring the height difference of water in the tank, and the weight required
to balance the level, the hydrostatic force of the water can be calculated by,

Pc= pressure at centroid of the immersed surface

A= area of the immersed surface
ρ= density of fluid
g= acceleration of gravity
yc= centroid of the immersed surface measured from the water surface
Partially submerged vertical surface

Hydrostatic force:

where
A: area, m^2 A = Bd
h: mean depth of immersion, m h = d/2

Fully submerged vertical surface

Hydrostatic force:

Depth of center of pressure below pivot, h'r;

then,
