INTRODUCTION OF TRANSPORT
1.1 – DEFINITION OF TRANSPORT
➢ Is a movement of either goods or passenger (public and
private transport) from the point of origin to the point of
consumption.

Transportation System
❑ A system- The structure of ways where a particular transport can
be operated safely regardless of its mode.
❑ Even though public transport comes in many forms, sizes and
shapes but the one thing they all have in common is a system.
❑ A system might consist of the vehicle, way, terminal and its
infrastructure accordingly to the nature of transport.

1. Generate Economic Activities
❑Economic activities: The business activities that can be
generated through the role of transportation by supplying
items or movement of goods and passengers from one place
to another.
❑This involves local people and goods as well as people and
goods from outside of the country.
❑WTO removed barriers and created free trade among
member countries. From there, the term ‘trade liberalization’
evolved. There are 153 members worldwide.

2. Employment
❑Transport civilized humans, in the way humans work and
travel to their workplace.
❑Travelling distances are made shorter now for employment
opportunities.

3. Reduce Travelling Time
❑ Travelling time refers to the total journey time taken to travel from one point to
another.
❑ It would have been near to impossible to achieve the same travelling time for
journeys made on foot or animals as it was in the old days.

4. Generate Income
❑According to the 9th Malaysian Plan, the commuter, LRT and monorail
systems have proven to be effective investments for the Malaysian
government and its population.
❑Transportation planning must also take into account the growth of new
residential areas; new commercial centers and complexes; new public
infrastructure; and population growth and density.

5. Accessibility
❑Here is where transport acts as the bridge to consumer gaps.
❑With the existence of transport, people from all over Malaysia can enjoy
eating rice where ever they are, as transport will transport it from the state of
origin to different states of destination as demanded.

Utility Concept in Transport
Definition: The process of increasing or improving value worth,
functionality or usefulness

Time utility: The condition where the product of goods is


demanded for a certain period of time.

Place utility : The added value that transport brings to a


product, such as geographical specialization, a large scale
production, increased competition and increase in the value of
the land in certain areas.
