I. INTRODUCTION

Consider the following when writing the introduction:

Start from the global theme to the national focus to local emphasis.

Thematically organized or arranged.

Provide a synthesis and research gap.

Study purpose/aim/objective or rationale: Why the study is significant and why there is a need to conduct
this study.

*3-4 paragraphs only. Indent (1/2 inch) your paragraph/s.

*Some of your literature review/survey may be incorporated into the introduction

Problem Statement - it is the general statement of the whole problem.

1. Lead-in
2. Declaration of originality
3. Justification

Further reading: Hernon, P., & Schwartz, C. (2007). What is a problem statement? Library and
Information Science Research, 3(29), 307-309.

Research Questions - specific questions or sub-problems. The research questions should capture the
problem statement.

Example: (Quantitative) What is the academic performance of the _____ when grouped according to
year level, age, and sports event?

Note: Avoid words such as ‘do,’ ‘does,’ ‘is,’ or ‘are,’ as they invite ‘yes’/’no’ responses.

Example: (Qualitative) How will the student-athletes, according to their sex or sports event, describe
their quality of life as university students?

Usually, describe and address the ‘what’ and ‘how’ questions.

Note: Avoid words such as ‘affect,’ ‘influence,’ ‘compare,’ and ‘relate’

Researcher. 23, 4, 19-23

Hypothesis/Hypotheses - it is a tentative conclusion or answer to the specific questions raised at the

beginning of the investigation. It is usually written in a null form and is commonly used in experimental
research.

Example: There is no significant difference between the academic performance of student-

athletes when grouped according to year level, sex, and sports event.

Notes: Usually, in quantitative research.

Hypothesis if singular.
Hypotheses if plural.

Significance of the Study - below are the guidelines

1. Rationale, timeliness, and relevance of the study.
2. A possible solution to the existing problems or improvement to the unsatisfactory
conditions.
3. Who are to be benefited, and how are they going to be benefited?
4. Possible contribution to the fund of knowledge.
5. Possible implication.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study - below are the guidelines

1. A brief statement of the general purpose of the study
2. The locale of the study, where the data will be gathered, or the entity to which the data
belong.
3. The population from which the respondents/participants will be selected. This must be
large enough to make generalization significant.
4. The period of the study. This is the time, either months or years, during which the data will
be gathered.

Example: The study will be limited to student-athletes enrolled in the Institute of Education
consistently for three consecutive years; 2004-2007 and 2008-2011. The scholarship record provided
by the Athletic Department serves as a basis for identifying student-athletes enrolment history in the
Institute of Education.

Grade weighted average will serve as the basis of the student-athlete's academic performance,
while the coaches’ evaluation will serve as the basis of their athletic performance. However, grades in
NSTP 1 and 2, PE 1-4, and Field study courses, which are one-unit courses are not included in
determining the grade weighted average.

Definition of Terms - operational definition, only terms, words, or phrases with special or unique
meanings in the study.

References: (APA 7th edition and in alphabetical order, second and succeeding lines should be
indented). Note that all “cited” entries must be found in the references.
