Course Syllabus 2011 Managerial skills Professor Mlanie CIUSSI In this document, you will find all relevant

information needed to follow the course: course content, evaluation, planning, grades etc. Please read it carefully as it may answer most of your questions. GENERAL This is an online course. So we will not be meeting in a classroom. But most materials are available to you online. Success in an online class depends on your self-discipline. You have to be self-motivated to read the modules and engage your class peers in an online conversation. We will use a Discussion Board for doing the conversations. Please visit the Discussion Board of the course on Linked In (group named Managerial Skills course 2011). You can also join YOUR community (LinkedIn subgroups have been created in RH, IS, Marketing/comm/sales, Finance, other). This participation is voluntary, and will not be part of the exams (neither grades). Participating with these communities will help you connect with your collegues working in the same field and exchanges experiences or managerial tips! These communities will stay active after the course. COURSE CONTENT Taking on the function of trainee manager always constitutes an important moment in your professional life. The changes you are living in your internship are many and significant. In terms of status, level of responsibility and professional level. This course aims at supporting you during this key period of taking on managerial functions and provides answers to your many questions. This is why this programme starts with helping you take stock of your new role. Module: Discover your style Today, being a manager is something of a balancing act: being there when you're needed, knowing when to step back but remain available, being firm but not overbearing, and so on. To be an effective manager, you have to adapt to different situations and people, and to do this you need to adopt different management styles. A mastery of these styles is a real asset. It will not only enable you to adapt to each of your team members; it's also a tool for boosting their level of autonomy. You can also vary your style during a one-to-one meeting, according to how the meeting goes. Module: Boost your communication This module deals with the fundamentals of interpersonal communication, allowing you to determine your own style of communication and helping you to identify possible areas for improvement. The aim is to enhance your communication skills and facilitate your relationships with others. If you don't know how to communicate an important message or active listening, you may not be able to address certain needs expressed by your team members, and this may ultimately lead to crisis or conflict. Learning how to communicate makes it possible to deal with these situations. Section 1: Discover your dominant style 1. Identify the different styles of communication Section 2: Effective communication techniques 1. Getting to know the different levels of communication 2. Make your point more effectively 3. Communicating an important message (action tips) 4. Practicing active listening (action tips)

Module: Manage in a complex world Be the leaders of the 21st century! Tackling new managerial issues, you might be the first to implement transverse management. Transverse management is essential in complex organisations where cooperation and responding collectively are essential. Transverse management both goes beyond and complements top-down management. The most significant progress in a company is made at points of cross-functional interaction. By acquiring this highly sought-after expertise, you'll become a valuable asset to your organisation. COURSE PLANNING Starting date: 1st february 2011 Week 1: Post in your community a brief description of your internship (name of the company and job title). Week 1, 2, 3, 4, 5: Self learning at your own pace End of Week 5 : Mid term exam. Available from 9h00 on Friday 4th MARCH until 12h00 Saturday 5th MARCH (GTM+1, Madrid, Bruxelles, Paris). The exam will last 1 hour. Ensure

you plan ahead some free time, even you are away.
Week 6, 7, 8, 9, 10: Self learning End week 10: Final exam. Available from 9h00 on Friday 8th APRIL until 12h00 Saturday 9th APRIL (GTM+1, Madrid, Bruxelles, Paris). The exam will last 1-2 hours. Ensure you plan

ahead some free time, even you are away.

A reminder of these dates will be sent to you by email prior the activities. GRADING MID TERM EXAM (20%)

A mid term exam will take place in March 2011. The mid term examination is an online quizz. The questions will be based on the course first 2 modules: Management styles and Boost your communication. The exam will count for 20% of your total grade for the course. It is your responsability to plan ahead 1 hour dedicated to the exam. For those with different time schedule, the exam is available for more than 24hrs (from Friday 9h00 until Saturday 12h00 ). You will have only 1 chance to pass the exam during this period. FINAL EXAM (80%) The Official Exam week is determined by SKEMA. It is the responsibility of the student to connect to the course on time. The exam will be beginning of april 2011. Please note that the exam will take place during day time and evening, as many of you are working during the day. For those with different time schedule, the exam is available for more than 24hrs(from Friday 9h00 until Saturday 12h00 ). You will have only 1 chance to pass the exam during this period. It is your responsability to plan ahead 1-2 hours dedicated to the exam. The final examination is an online quizz. The questions will be based on (a) ALL course modules, (b) key threads on the Managerial skills course discussion board on LinkedIn (not in YOUR community as this is volontary and may be personal experience). To prepare for this, it is highly encouraged that you do ALL course modules and engage regularly in the online discussions on LinkedIn. COURSE EVALUATION Approximately one week prior to the end of the term, you will receive an e-mail message asking you to complete a course evaluation. Click on the link in the e-mail and follow the instructions. Please note that all responses are completely anonymous and will be kept confidential.
